Hi there,

So, all very pleased with myself i bought a complete viv kit today from P@H. it looked so simple and easy and, since i'm rubbish at DIY, it seemed perfect for me but now that i have it set up there seems to be a number of issues with it.

1. The Viv measures 26 H x 44 W x 66 D (cm) and the shop told me it was perfect for the young snake i am looking at who is in the same size viv in store at the moment.

2. It came with a Pro-Rep heat mat that takes up half the floor space, plus thermostat with digital reader (sits outside the viv) . Inside the tank are two probes, one to the thermometer, the other to the thermostat. The probes are on a thin layer of aspen covering the heatmat with a tiny bit of aspen sprinkled over the top, so not touching directly but very near.

The viv is away from direct sunlight, radiators and other random heat sources!

I have a hide at the warm end and one at the cool end where i have also placed the water.

Probs
1) the temp isnt constant. why does it change if i am not touching the thermostat?

2) do i need more / less substrate?

3) should the probes touch the mat directly?

Thanks for your input here, i dont want to get the snake until this temp issue is sorted x

the probes need to touch directly.

the temps should stay withing to temps, mine stay between 27.1 and 28, a liitle change is normal

Please forgive me primrose if I am telling you something you already know but just want to make sure you have the mat slid in-between the 2 pieces of glass. I only say this as somebody posted on here a month or so ago about an heating issue with one of these vivs/fauns and he did not have the mat in the right place :)

Depends what you mean by not constant. It will vary by 2-4 degrees depending on how accurate it is. The thermostat allows the temp to get to a max then turns the mat off, then it will drop to a min and turn it back on again. You want to aim for 28 degrees average, so as long as the range sits approx between 26 and doesn't go over 30 that is about right. :)

Oh sorry Hissyfit, didn't realise he'd been sold! Yay, glad he's found a home, if I hadn't just got a new one I'd have been sorely tempted, he's gorgeous!

Sounds good to me Mamma!

I was totally resigned to the fact we would definitely be stopping at the 2 we've got plus 1 more - Corno for my son, Ember is mine, and then hubby wants a hognose at some later date. (Plus if daughter wants one when older that's only fair too).

Last night hubby was telling me about his day at work and he was telling them all about Ember and the fact that I... I want a hognose (passing all the blame here and not admitting he wants one lol!). Apparently he then said 'she's totally addicted, no way she's gonna stop at 2, we're going to end up with a houseful!'

OMG, well what's that if not a green light to get more? Yay!!!! lol!
