Hi All,
What size RUB is best for hatchies? How big is too big? I want something they will be comfortable in. How often do you have to go to a bigger size? I guess it depends on the snake but a rough idea would be great.
This may seem a daft question, but a RUB will be okay with a heat mat under it won't it? It won't crack or anything? Heat mat will be on a stat of course.
I'm looking into my options for housing hatchies that I am hoping to get in the next month or so. I want everything to be ready for them I think a faun would be massive for a young hatchie wouldn't it? It still looks big for Apollo and he's a yearling (yeah, a very small one, but a yearling none the less)
How big is the average hatchling? I've not had one before so an idea of length/weight would be helpful.
Thanks,
Moppet. |

I use...http://www.exo-terra.com/en/products/faunarium.php the biggest one at the bottom there for my 8 month old cornsnakes - they've been in them since they were 6 months old and the one who didn't escape for 3 1/2 months is nearly big enough to need a new home. Before that in the petshop they were in tubs that were a bit bigger than chinese takeaway tubs (around 15cm wide, 25cm deep, 10cm high).
We've had heat mats under them on thermostats ever since we got them and there hasn't been any issue with them melting or cracking.
Provided you provide enough hides and cover for the snake to move around in and hide in, your snake will be happy in an environment. The argument for this theory goes a little something like : in the wild they would be in foliage, wheat fields, hedges, trees etc etc, as long as they have plenty of places to hide and don't have to deal with big open spaces (or even relatively small open spaces) your snake should be fine.
Fauns are great - you know the lid will shut, it'll take the heat, they're fairly cheap and very easy to clean. Hatchings vary in size, but they all seem to sit easily in the palm of a hand when curled up. |

I housed my little hatchling in a 7x7x7" breeder box and kept it in a 30x30x30cm exo terra terrarium. He moved into the exo when he was 5 1/2 months old, and has just recently moved into a 24" monkfield viv (he'll be 1 year old next week). They are tiny when hatchlings, and a tea light candle holder makes a great water bowl and half toilet roll tubes are ideal sized hides The RUB will be fine with a heat mat under it as long as it's on a stat |
