Hey, my Corn snake had been in shed for the last couple of weeks, and she finally shed last night. Now I have some questions. She has some stitches. It's a long story but she has stitches.
Her shed wasn't too bad but it's a bit messy around the stitches and her tail is still on. I red somewhere that leaving the tail on is dangerous to snakes. The shed is also in about 5-6 pieces so she obviously struggled.
So yeah what happens now? She only shed last night is it okay to handle her yet or is it best to leave her alone for about 24 hours or so?
She's currently doing laps around the light.. Lol |

You can handle her now. I'd give her a bath and let her slither through a towel. This sometimes encourages any retained shed to come off. You're correct that retained tail shed can cause problems for snakes. It can cut off blood supply to the tail. It's possible for a snake to loose it's tail because of this. You may fnd that she sheds again quite soon as her stitches heal. Maybe use a damp moss hide and put the water in the warm end next time she goes blue. Hope this all helps..... |

Okay, I'll try that when I get back home, and how long can I wait before that happens? I mean obviously I'm going to help her get it off ASAP but if I need to go out and get a moss hide I might not be able to do it today, I think my local reptile shop is closed on Sundays I think. And okay cool thanks, cheers for letting me know. And yeah I put her water in the hot end this time, hopefully it helped.
She's currently asleep wrapped round her light, I turned it off because it gets proper hot |

Should be fine to wait untill you can get a moss hide tomorrow but until then you could always get her out and let her slither through a damp towel to give her a hand, also you say your light is 'proper hot'? Do you have a guard on it and is it thermostated, snaked can get very bad burns from both of these not being used |

Okay cheers, and okay, I'll bath her later and I will let her go through the towel. And I'm not sure. How do I check? The light has been made from exo terra so it couldn't be that bad could it? I mean it's been on all day sometimes and she'll still wrap herself round it and won't get burnt or anything |

All heat lamps and lights (if they are not LED) need guards also the heat lamp really must be thermostated, there both rather important requirements |

Okay I'll look into it, does anybody have any links to any good light set ups?
Also my local reptile shop were open today, so I went down to see them and they suggested NOT to bathe her with her stitches. And they recommended me to get some cotton and some warm water and just rub the shed with it, they had no moss and they weren't getting any in for a while. Does that sound like the right thing to do? |

Maybe just use a damp tea towel to let her wriggle through and see if that removes thed shed. Sid had a bit left on his tail once and as I was holding him to look at it, it just started to peel away in my hands so I just held it and let him wriggle his way out of it. |

Sorted!! Thank God!
I got my mum in to help me as well but we got a bit of cottom, got it slightly wet and just rubbed her with it really gently, it worked, got all the last bits of shed off which is excellent. She even seemed to enjoy it, she didn't seem distressed or uncomfortable by anything which was pretty nice to see.
She was certainly in high spirits afterwords so that's a win in my books :) |
