They're not rubbish pics Hayley. Axies are so sweet....and bizarre! You'll have to put up some pics of them in their new home, once they've settled in.

LOVE the AXOLOTLS -something I do know about at last! I bred LOTS for many years-in all colours:Golden,Leucistic,Melanistic,Wild type(Green)Albino(pink eyes) Pied and Banana Pied . Arya is very interesting-she is showing a lot of Iridophores-the sparkly gold flecs even on her gill branches Sometimes with age this type fade from the belly up and end up with what I called Banana Pied-white tums, then a band of yellow then chocolate and finishing with a black dorsal-Stunners!! |

ooh interesting... I know nothing about colours etc but did get a surprise when I saw her gold gills... it is very pretty. They are apparently 5 months old so will be interesting to see how she turns out in the end... hopefully get tank pics tomorrow (dead cam batt lol)

If I can help in any way with these lovely beasties just ask Top tip:keep 'em COLD and if you can get them to eat thin strips of beef heart-wiggled about on tongs, before you know it they will eat sizeable chunks of the aquaria floor. Then you dont risk disease from livefoods. If you use any stones/gravel they have to be big enough not to be swallowed OR picked up by females cloaca in mistake for semen bundles When they injure each other/lose bits ie.legs/toes they regenerate quicker at temps.below 15c.
Sorry I'll stop now! but I just love these guys good luck and enjoy |

They are awesome nearly came home with one of them many years ago, but came home with 2 paddle tail newts. One of which passed away last year, the other - Bully.... hes still going strong Hes been with me 6 years now and was a juvie when he came to me. My daughter has an Italian crested newt as well. Do please keep updating with photos. Im not going to be getting one anymore as with my joint probs, doing the water changes for Bruce and Bully are a huge job for me, so I wouldnt manage a 3rd aquarium set up. |

Please feel free to add my photography page on facebook .... or check me out on deviantart : https://www.facebook.com/groups/MaliskaRodgersPhotography/ http://maliskarodgers.deviantart.com/ |

Well the tank atm is cool, has a turtle dock which i have converted into a gentle filter. I got a few stones but they are really big (easily over 2 in across for smallest) some fake and live plants, flower pot and a faw other bits. Im using sand on the bottom. They are really fascinating... they are really fun to watch :p Anya is very friendly as well

Not bugging lols they are great beasties! I had a box of wild axolotls delivered once and when they arrived there was 5 axolotls and a weird lumpy thing. They had been shopped together in ONE bag and box, during the journey they had munched away on one.She was missing ALL legs, most of her tail and part of her head which included an EYE. I kept her on her own in a tank with a beer cooler on it(temp 12-14c)she grew back SIX legs all her tail and her head complete with a non functioning eye She went on to have many breeding seasons and many, many babies AXOLOTLS ARE GREAT! |

You better believe it! The correct term is 'Neotenous'this means they can reproduce in the larval state, this sort of extended foetus like state is what gives them the ability to regrow limbs/organs etc. If you realy wanted to trigger metamorphosis you have to inject a kind of thryoxin. Then you would get butt ugly Salamanders that only live for 5-6 yrs. Axolotls can live over 30yrs,my biggest oldest male was over 20yrs and 18" long. Enjoy-AXOLOTLS ARE GREAT |

[/quote] Filters are a bit of a waste of time-realy only to make the water clear so they can be viewed.Axolotls ARE ammonia macines they excrete from their skin as well as cloaca. No way of avoiding regular water changes with these guys! I kept mine in massive 'plasterers baths'4ftx2ftx3ft plastic tanks,in same sex groups of up to 15 large adults. A syphon is useful as a couple of days after eating they do snakey type poop-by syphon spot cleaning you can get your water changes in. Sand can be a bit abrasive on the skin-and not good when eaten with food.I used flat slate or flat cobbles. This is doubly useful as the males like to deposit their spermy 'love pyramids'on a flat surface-their breeding is incredible;the male persuades the female (by a sort of dance) to walk over the sperm package, she picks it up by her cloaca and is fertilized internally. Your girls may need a manly axolotl when they are big, they will fill up with eggs and its not best for them to retain them. They are incredible creatures and your girls are lovely
