Hi everyone, as in the title I've noticed blood in my snake's vivarium. She (I think) is 13/14 months old, around 2 1/2 ft long. She started eating small adult mice a couple of months ago, and a few weeks ago I noticed a small red spot by her water bowl. I thought I'd just monitor it but last week there was a slightly bigger spot and a couple of days after the last feed earlier this week there was a big patch around her water dish.
I noticed recently too that she has a small lump in her spine about 1/3 of the the way down her body. Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

Hi,

Sorry to hear this. I know this may sound stupid are you 100% it's blood. Just hoping it's not. But could it possibly be from a prey item or a regurge?

If it's blood from the snake you need to get it to the vet's asap.

Has she shed around that time?Is she fed inside the viv?As could be the mouses blood.

If she does have lump developing and seems to be passing blood.A vet visit might be advisable.

Thanks for the replies. She is fed inside the viv, I put a a mat down so she doesn't ingest any aspen. It's appeared a few times, this being the only time it's been a large patch which made me worry! It's been around the water dish every time, not sure if that means anything. It also has appeared a few days after feeding each time. I'm not 100% sure it's blood as it's not a particularly "bloody" colour but couldn't think what else it could be! Maybe I should see what happens next time I feed then go to the vets if it happens again?

It does look a strange colour for blood... if you do take her to the vets, I'd probably take some of the stained bedding with you, just to show to the vet...

It looks weird, you don't think there could have been something in the aspen, and she spilled her water on it? I really have no idea, but hope she's ok.

Sorry to hear about the worries, I'd agree if it is blood or the slightest hint it may be I'd visit the vets asap.

On another note what is the redish looking item on the left hand side of the pic, I was wondering if its a red towel or some fabric material that some dye could be coming out of?

Hmm,I suspect that red fabric/carpet thingy too.Have you checked around the vent area? I seem to remember recently someone found that a male snake had a splinter of aspen stuck in his vent area after mating.
Still vet may be a good idea, just to rule out nastiness's.Good luck and please keep us posted

It does look an unusual colour and texture for blood but would get snakey examined by a vet asap It almost looks like some sort of dye has leached off something, but really would see a vet.

The red thing is an old bandana she likes to hide in! I think it's unlikely to be from that but it is a strange colour. Interestingly now I think of it, I have used different aspen recently. I fed her again last night so if another patch appears it's time for a vet trip I suppose!

If it's been happening a few days after feeding every time, she could lose blood while trying to defecate. Hoping that's not the case..
