Well my snake used to shed really good, but these past like 4 or 5 sheds over 6 months have all been in pieces, and ive been misting his cage every morning and night and giving him an occasional bath. but im not quite sure what to do to make him shed in one piece again. sometimes the skin is stuck to him for 3 or 4 days before he finally gets most of it off. I had to help him one time and it took 3 hours of him running through a damp towel to get it off. I don't want to keep having to do that because I want him to be able to do it on his own. Also last time he shed, he still has some of his tail piece on, like the last centimeter, and it wont come off. im afraid if I mess with it too much his tail will fall off. so what should I do about that? So here are my questions:

1. What are some tips or tricks I can do to make him shed normal again?
2. What to do about the retained tail piece?
3. Is it ok to leave pieces of the shed in the tank? I keep finding pieces all over and im sure ive missed a bunch.

Have you tried a moist hide? Put damp sphagnum moss in a hide, so they can sit in it for a bit, might help. A bigger waterbowl could be a good idea too if it's not already big enough for your snake to get in. I give Luna a bath when she's cleared up but before she sheds, seems to do the trick. She sometimes struggles if I don't give her a bath.

I have a big water dish on the warm side, and a smaller dish on the cool side, and I have a coconut shell with the moss in there, and it still hasn't come off. kinda stressful

I wouldn't much pressure on, if the old skin is still firmly attached, you could take the new skin off with it.

You could try soaking the snake for around 10 mins, letting it bathe in luke warm water ( around 28 C ). Only when the old skin is truly soaked, try the towel.

Or, you could make a moist hide, with damp sphagnum moss - but make it in a tub you can full close, with some air holes. Shut the snakey in for about an hour ( keep it not too cold, but not too warm ) - so he HAS to stay in there - and it might come off by itself.

You really do need to remove the skin, as otherwise it will constrict the end of the tail and cause it to die off. I can understand your worry about pulling too hard though! Corno had retained about 5mm on the end of her tail the first time she shed with us. I was worried about hurting her too. I used damp kitchen roll, let her run through it and just squeezed when she got to her tail. I didn't pull, but allowed her to pull herself through, gradually increasing the pressure each time as I wasn't sure how hard to squeeze at first. The first time I tried about 3-4 times then stopped, then I left her a couple of days with a dmap hide and tried again and this time it worked.

What normally works for me is fill a small lockable tub with damp sphagnum moss and put snakey inside and put in on the heat matt for half hour till its all misted (make sure there's a few air holes tho) then let the snake go through a damp cloth apply abit off pressure but not too tight and it should all come off

Hey I had the same thing happen to my baby once, and all I did was to moist the unshed tail in olive oil. Leavi it like that and it will eventually come off if it doesn't right away :)

The moist hide worked! I let him sit in there for an hour and then just rubbed where the skin was and it slowly started to peel back and then I just rolled it off! thanks for the help everyone!!
