Hi, I just joined this forum! Mostly because i have a question.
We just bought a 3 year old corn snake from a local reptile shop. We were told she had recently laid eggs.
She has this big furrow in her underside (pictures)
That is approximately two thirds down her body. It is about 6 inches long.
Any information would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
I would be inclined to take her to a specialist reptile vet to get that looked at. Keep us posted please. |

| This does not look healthy to me :s id take her to a vet to get checked over... I havnt seen anything like it myself. Could be wrong though. |

That really doesn't normal, + 1 for taking her to the vets. Her skin also looks like she could be dehydrated, or possibly having a retained shed. Any chance of a full body photo? That might give us better idea.

 This is close on her full body, but from the top. She does look like she is shedding, I had assumed she was just scratching it off, there are pieces of old skin everywhere.
If you think thats a problem and that she may be dehydrated, should i mist her home up with a water spray as well as leave her fresh water to bathe in? |

How long ago did she lay? My friends corn looked like that with a caved in underneath for a few days after laying earlier this year.... But it was back to normal within 3 days.
I would definitely get her to a specialised rep vet.
In the mean time you can help with any dehydration or stuck shed by giving her a shallow bath, be careful about the temp- it should feel slightly cool to you & don't leave her unattended in there. |

From what i was told, possibly a smidge over two weeks ago. She hadn't been eating since. She did eat after i got here here and sorted her out a new home though.
I'll try giving her a little shallow bath :) |

| After a cozy bath, try and get her to run through a damp cloth (warm) the is cupped in your hand a few times, this helps buff bad shed off. |

| What size food are you trying her on? My Luna wouldn't touch anything bigger than a rat pup for a few weeks after laying, normally she's on large mice. I'd suggest feeding her little and often if she'll take it, she looks very skinny to me :/ |

Okay, so I gave her a bath last night, I wasn't sure how long to give her, so she got 20 minutes of supervised bath time. I placed her back in her viv afterwards, but I also gave her more rough surfaces to rub against and to explore around (i stole those from my lizard viv's until I can get to the shop and buy more) Looked in this morning, most of the shed is gone from her underneath and sides. She just has some stuck on her back now. She is looking much healthier already, although there is still that weird belly.
I've fed her on the second biggest mouse the reptile shop sells. I'll instruct the BF to pick up another on his way home, and we shall see if she is hungry tonight.
Thank you all for the advice. I'll keep an eve on her as she looks healthy and if that gap doesn't fill in a reasonable time as she puts on eight I shall consult a vet. (vet reccomendations around tyneside would be welcome)

You musn't feed her too close together - not sure when you fed her from your post, but I'd say she looks super skinny currently so would feed every 6 days personally (usually for an adult it would be every 10-14 days but she looks seriously underweight). I hope the rep shop didn't charge you too much - she looks more like a rescue! Don't worry though, I am sure with a bit of TLC you will soon have her looking in top condition :D

| im REALLY suprised a shop sold you a snake so soon after laying eggs. especially looking like that. looking at the body shape from top pics she both dehydrated and under weight. both most likey due to recently laying. to help her re hyrdrate you can give them powerade baths. which works wonders. and as said above feed every 5-6 days for a few feeds to get her eating again. |

I must admit, I was thinking along the same lines as Chris, in that that the shop shouldn't have sold a snake in this condition. But, hopefully, with a bit of TLC, she'll be ok. The bath you gave her would have helped a bit with the dehydration, and she's eaten for you, which is a good sign.
As Smart Bunny and Chris already said, don't feed more often than every 5 - 6 days, otherwise you might overload her and risk regurge ( and don't handle her 48 hours after feeding ). It's often better to feed 2 smaller items, than 1 huge one, as they're meant to be easier to digest. As long as your temperatures are good ( 28 - 29 C hot end, 21 -22 cold end ), and she keeps the food down, she should be ok. Good luck with her, and keep us posted. And good on you for taking her on :-) |

Thank you all very much for the help!
Thinking back on it, i don't remember us filling in any paperwork at the shop before we took her, we always did that in the past for our baby corn and out small collection of lizards.
I'll feed her tonight, its been six days since i fed her. She ate just a few hours after we brought her home saturday. I'll keep noting down when and how much i'm feeding and keep a good check on water level and humidity as well as temperature. She should be fine here living with us, she seems to like me, she has been calm when i have handled her and has had a good nose anout me, even inside my clothes this morning...
I'll be sure to post up if i have any problems. I'll also post another picture in a few weeks when she should be looking better.

That's shocking, I've never seen anything like this ever. Please don't go to that shop again if they sell animals in that state as animals in that state should never be sold, only given away.
I hope she looks better soon. |

She is looking better now. She is still very skinny looking, but the underside has filled back out to a normal shape again. Her de-hydration has vanished, if anything i think i may have kept her in too humid an environment for the last couple of weeks. When i fed her last week, she ate two medium mice, the second one took a bit of encouragement. This week i'll see if she takes both righ off me and maybee keep another in case she is hungry.
The shop she came from is quite a new shop, Pet outlet in Royal quays, north shields. |

| I'm glad she seems better! As others have said that snake does not look it should have been sold in that condition. But with a bit of care it'll be fine! |
