Hey guys. This morning I noticed that Oscar's mouth looks odd. It's like his bottom 'lip' if you like is pushed inwards on the left hand side. It was definitely not like this 2 days ago. (Not sure about yesterday he was hiding his face when I changed water)
The cats aren't allowed in the room with the snakes without supervision as they can be a bit 'starey' and I don't want snakes being stressed - however Yoda has now discovered how to open the door! I woke up last night early in the morning and Ed was sitting watching Oscar, who was right up at the glass too. I'm wondering whether he's struck the glass and that's what's caused it? I'm gona get a vets appt but could someone have a look at these pics and let me know if this is something you have seen before? Worried about him he's still able to flick his tounge.

There definitely seems to be something going on Alannah, although quite what I don't know. One of my snakes has a slightly misaligned jaw on one side but it's been like that since I got her so I don't know if she had it from birth or whether it was down to an injury. I'm glad you're getting him checked out, that would be my response as well.
When was he last fed? Am just wondering if things haven't quite gone back into place after eating.
Please let us know how you get on. And I'm thinking maybe you need to either change the door handle or start locking the door, your cats are too clever!
Xxx

Diego does this quite a bit, never lasts more than a few hours though. Usually a good yawn sorts it out. How long has it been this way? |

Really? It's not something I've ever seen before! Do you have any idea how it happens?
Well when I had him out on Wednesday night, it definately wasn't like this. Yesterday, I never seen his face so it must have happened between Wednesday late late night and early hours of this morning. There's a possibility it's only been a matter of minutes, or hours.
Hopefully when I see him tonight it's corrected itself!
I called the vets anyway and the earliest appt I can get isn't until Tue (and that depends on if I can get away from work) but the woman on the phone said to try feed him tomorrow to see if he is able to eat or not. And obviously to call for an emergency appt over weekend if needed. |

Just a thought - have you looked in his mouth, or very gently tried to open his mouth ( from the healthy side )? You might find it sorts itself out, if he opens/ closes/ rearranges his mouth couple of times. I would also consider trying feeding, and watch him eating closely, to see if he will eat without problems, and if he does eat ok - if you can see any problems or damage inside. If he hasn't got the appointment till Tuesday, he will have 4 days to digest, anyway.
Hope he's ok, and keep us posted... |

No I haven't done that yet, I wasn't too sure whether to or not. You think it would be ok to try this? I'm not home till late tonight late night at work and a friends birthday meal straight after. But I'll maybe try this when I get home.
Yeah I'll attempt a feed also, and see how he gets on - the woman said it will probably give more of an indication of whether he is uncomfortable or not. And yeah Razee, I'll be able to have a look inside his mouth a bit easier that way too
Thanks for the concern!
Oh, also, how would I open his mouth? Sorry if that's a daft question lol - don't want to hurt him |

I was very worried as Vince had a misaligned jaw for a few hours, and, as SilverWings said, he yawned and it fixed itself. Not sure if this is the same thing though. |

Yeah it's an odd one. It's like someone has tucked the bottom jaw under his top jaw! |

I keep looking at the pics ( you managed to capture it pretty well) - and just keep thinking, what could it be. I did cross my mind - if he did strike hard at the glass, with his mouth open, could he have broken the very tip of his right jaw bone? I would imagine, if he did, there would have been some swelling, though, and there clearly isn't any - so I'd guess he just forced his lip back, and maybe it got stuck that way. If that's the case, eating should put it back, as the two bottom jaws will be spread apart and moving, when he's eating.
Sorry I keep on about it, he's just such a lovely chap :-)
P.s. You don't need to look in his mouth as you'll get a pretty good view when he's finishing eating, but if you did want to, this is what I was taught by the vets: It's better if you have someone else holding the snake, so you can just concentrate on the head. Gently slide your hand up his neck, and hold him behind the head. ( That took me several attempts, Baz is very wriggly, and doesn't appreciate her head being touched ). Then you can use something smooth, and blunt to gently open his mouth with ( I was using syringe tip, as I was giving medication, but people use ballpoint pen - obviously, with the tip retracted,or the stick of a cotton bud, anything smooth ) - once you get it in their mouth, they usually open really wide, as they try to get rid of it. Start at the front, but in Oscar's case, I'd not touch the tucked in area.
Anyway, hope you don't need any of this, and it just pops back by itself.. :-) |

This happened once to Prism - except hers looked worse. We were so worried for about 24hrs, then 2 nights later I looked in at her, and she was all back to normal! We were SO relived.
Fingers crossed for you it's the same with Oscar, that he just sorts it out on his own in a day or so. |

Thanks Razee. He sleeps against the glass like that, very handy haha!
I was back late lastnight and had a look, it's the same. So I'm making a mouse now for a feed, and see how that goes. Thanks for that, hopefully I won't need to do that but he doesn't mind his head being touched, so if I do it shouldn't be too hard.
Thanks smart bunny, yeah hopefully it's the same! |
