Okay, so this is a bit of a weird one! I have inherited a carolina cornsnake (18 months old) and have been taking good care of her for a couple of months. I upgraded her home and got her a huge pimped out vivarium, have been feeding her once a week and cleaning out her. My only problem now is that I'm still too scared to pick her up!
I really want to take her out for 'play time' but I have a serious mental block. It has got to the point that I was thinking about selling her, but now I'm not so sure if I want to. Ideally I would like to 'hire' someone to take her out a few times for me so that I could watch and learn, and when I am confident I could carry on by myself. Is there anyone around the warwickshire area who would be willing to do this? Otherwise I just don't know what to do

Try it with a thin glove on, remember you touching them is like someone tapping on ya shoulder from behind, makes ya jump out ya pants but the feeling soon goes. It's common for snakes tokinda jump if you touch them and they haven't been handled much, specially if they were napping :P

Yes I have actually held her before I was given her, but she has always been gotten out and handed to me. Now it's just us and at first I did try picking her up. But she always jumps when I touch her and then I run away. Since then I have given up. However, I just remembered that I did pick up her once when she escaped and I saw her sliding down the back of my drawers. I did it out of shear panic, but I almost died of a heart attack so that wasn’t so great. |

i can vouch for hamsters being nastier! having been biten by both a corn and a hammy the hammy definalty hurt more also my finger got infected  |

Have you physically touched the snake at all since you've had her? If not, I would start out slowly by just introducing your hand to the viv and maybe lightly stroking her body as she goes past. Once you're comfortable with that you could try holding her middle as she goes past so you are holding her in your hand but she's still really close to the floor of the viv and you can safely pull away if you need to. Wish I were close enough to help! My friend is still working her way up to handling my corn and king - the irony that she prefers the idea of handling the king hasn't quite reached her yet. Problem for her is how fast they can move, but really our pair are quite dopey and well mannered. The king even gives you warning signs before she goes to bite (she sniffs your hand looking for the most juicy part) but hasn't done that for two weeks or more now.
Probably not helping, but I can sympathise with you! My corn has never bitten or even gone to bite anyone, you even have a struggle to get him to snap at his food! I think it's very sweet that you're looking after her so well and hope someone can continue to let you do so and eventually you'll have a corn wrapped around your arm as a bracelet as you're cleaning out their viv! |

I'm to far away if she lived closer I would happily help as I've a fairly large snake and really docile Royal that love being handled.
