Hi all. Am a proud new owner of a 8 month old Carolina Corn Snake. First snake I have owned but have kept spiders for over 20 years and also have 3 Chinese Tree Frogs. I have the tank on a matt with stat at 30 C and humidity is 50%. Have aspen substrate and loads of hiding spots and fake foliage. My question is about lighting. I realise snakes do not need lighting but I would like some lighting to display the beautiful colours. The lighting would only be on for a couple of hours a night and I just need advice on what to buy. I was thinking LED as it doesn't generate much heat. Any advice would be welcome. Cheers.

Hi and welcome :) Yes they thermo-regulate themselves so if they need heat they will move :) Oooooh yes you can def handle snakes, corn snakes in particular are very docile so easily handled tho of course if young will be a little quicker than an adult, it very much depends on the snake as to how much you handle them tho for example some snakes like 5 - 10 minutes every couple of days where as my yearling comes out every day (bar the two days after feeding) for anything from 15 minutes to half hr nd has been know to snuggle up under my clothes and be there for up to an hr, just keep an eye on the snakes body temperature when their out too as i let mine roam free ( :) )she is usually under clothes getting body heat directly from me. Hope i've helped and look forward to seeing pictures of your little one. :D

Cool, will do. Great advice on here.

Yeah u can handle but let ya snake settle in for a week then offer a feed an get feeding established first then start to handle, will be a it Kitty to start but will settle with time.

OK, I guess they move into the heat when needed?
Should I handle him? Some people say yes, some say no. What is the correct answer? Some people handle spiders but I always worked on the principle that all spiders feel threatened When handled. Do snakes get used to handling and do they enjoy it?

John, try and get your hot end thermometer sensor more in the middle of the mat and tweak your temp down a deg or two, 30 deg should be the max :)

Hi, thanks for your swift replies. My Corn has a thermometer with 2 sensors in his vivarium. The hot end of the tank registers 30.4C and cool end 18C. The sensor in the warm end is under the aspen pointed to the edge of the heat mat. The mat is under the glass and the sensor is on top of the glass in the vivarium.
I will check out the Ikea LEDs as they seem to be the way forward. I only intend using the lights after work for 2 hours maximum.
My Corn Snake is a standard Carolina but has stunning colours and I know i will end up buying more in the future with different colours. They are beautiful animals.

Here to support the current IKEA range of LEDs. Me and my OH have them in our snake's vivs and they work brilliantly for finding poop, giving snake a bit more light or pretty colours. They're called Dioders and we got the multicoloured versions which also do white.

Ikea LED's are the way to go, there are quite a few of us on here who use them. Bit of a warning to you corns are very addictive so don't be at all surprised if soon you add another to your collection

As Georgina points out you set the temperature using a thermometer and not what it says on the thermostat as the printed numbers aren't a million miles out but they aren't accurate enough to rely on.

I use Ikea LED's they are brilliant and you can change the colour as you see fit.

Snakes can see colours even red and blue its just less intrusive than white light which is what they recognise as daylight.

I only use mine for a few hours a day if I want to view them but mainly its off and they seem to have accepted them as non threatening.
Georgina Posted - 24/04/2012 : 19:39:28
the stat temp will be different to the actual temp, do you have a digital thermometer?

leds are the way forward, if you use red or blue they cannot see it and will be more active. x
