Help!!

Ive recently adopted a corn snake. He is a 2 yr old called Bronson. (not my chosen name, personally I prefer Jaffa but I'm not allowed to change it)

I had him off my brother and he has never had issues picking him up in the past. He had a tank which opened from
Above so used to pick him up this way.

I had bronson month ago and handled him before we moved him into his new home. He is now in a vivarium with sliding glass doors slightly bigger than his old home. He ate 2 mice straight away and then I left him for a while as his skin went quite dark and I guessed he was due to shed. He eventually shed last week and had since eaten another 2 mice.

He has 2 hides at each end of the viv. One at the warm end and one at the cold end. He has a bamboo root and leaves etc for climbing and seems happy enough but injury can't get him out the viv.

I've tried a couple of times but he's just so jumpy. I tried to pick him up earlier but he went to strike. He didn't bite but I font really want to risk it. I personally don't think my brother handled him enough and I really want him to get used to bring handled as when he's out he loves it.

I'm really not sure of the best way to pick him up without stessing him out. He seems happy enough when he'd out it's just getting him out thats the problem.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

bronson is a awesome name!! after charles bronson!! legend!! haha i say the same as okeetee mick! just do it!! when snakes pull their heads back they tend to go into an s position doesnt always mean their going to strike, try picking him up from the back of the snake. or place your hand in to his level and let him come to you. remember snakes predators like big birds come from above some snakies get frightened due to instinct! but the more you hesitate and hang around the more its going to annoy the snake.
so just think "whats the worst that can happen" ? nothing thats going to hurt you anyway :)

you can do it :) good luck :)

nice looking snake...

use the link for the image when u choose "share" on Snapbucket... then select the img url, and pop it in img tags for BBcode... <img> http://photobucket.com/mysnakepic.jpg </img> using squarre brackets [] instead of <> The / in the bbcode signifies the end of that piece of code.

Hope this helps

The link works to Photobucket but the pic does not show up on here. Paste the IMG code onto your post and it will show.

Well done for finally getting him out to play. Not so good for him pooping on your bed but like you say he could have done it on you which is an experience and the smell on your hands is lovely
jessied24 Posted - 15/03/2012 : 22:39:52
He was fed a week ago. He's already done his pooping. Of well could have been worse he could have pooped on me. Pics are on my phone I was hoping there was a quick uploader. I'll give the sticky thing a look anyway

Welcome to the Poop Club. You will learn to wait a couple of days after feeding before taking him out to play.

You need to upload to Photobucket (or similar) and post the link to it in your message. There is a 'sticky' in the Photo Forum which shows you how. I use DropBox which runs from my Desktop. It means I can keep high image quality.

I went to the shop and they were out of night vision goggles unfortunately. I did however have another go ands manage to get him out. I think it could have been done a lot quicker though. Took me a few minutes. Put him on my bed for 1 minute and he pooped !!!
Auld Baldy Posted - 15/03/2012 : 21:26:58
You could make sure he doesn't see you if you wait until night-time, turn off the lights and put on a pair of night vision goggles. That will give you a definite advantage to ambush him.

Just open the viv door and go straight in, scoop and lift without faffing about or snatching at him. Both of these will stress him. Going to slow makes you look and feel like a predator to him. Too fast and he thinks he is being attacked. The 'S' pose is just a sign that he's not sure of you. It is him bluffing and making out that he's a fierce beast of legend.

Once you have him in your hand let him run through your fingers, around your hand or even up your arm. Don't grip or hold tight, just let him pass him from one hand to the other if he stretches out. He will eventually realise that it isn't so bad and relax more and more.

Give it another go and don't worry about defence 'bites', a lot of the time it is just a head slap. I've had more accidental bites when feeding than actual attacks when handling. It is barely more than a little nip and nothing to dial 999 for.

Failed again guys. I think tomorrow I'll try and scoop from under the hide, that way he can't see me. What do you think?
Okeetee Mick Posted - 15/03/2012 : 18:42:16
Just do it, say to yourself no matter what, that snake is coming out tonight and do it. The longer you leave it the harder it gets.
jessied24 Posted - 15/03/2012 : 18:34:28
Hi all I tried again last night but as soon as I out my hand into the viv and went near him he went into the "s" position. I think maybe I need to wait until he is a bit more comfortable and just go for it. I didn't have any problems before but since he tried to strike a couple of days ago it's scared me a little. A bit silly really as I'm not really phased by other animals biting such as my dog and he can do a lot more damage than a corn. Maybe it's because I've never been bitten I'm just wary of the unknown.

I think it's just me being too hesitant. You reckon another go at scooping tonight or leave him a day?
tordyjo Posted - 15/03/2012 : 17:00:01
good luck, just go for it, i have one who doesn't nip but does try and strike if you go in the viv, i gently pick her up from her coils and once in hands she's absolutely fine, defiately a trust thing between you and snakey, the snake needs to learn to trust you that you won't hurt it and you have to trust snakey that it won't hurt you
