Help!!

Ive recently adopted a corn snake. He is a 2 yr old called Bronson. (not my chosen name, personally I prefer Jaffa but I'm not allowed to change it)

I had him off my brother and he has never had issues picking him up in the past. He had a tank which opened from
Above so used to pick him up this way.

I had bronson month ago and handled him before we moved him into his new home. He is now in a vivarium with sliding glass doors slightly bigger than his old home. He ate 2 mice straight away and then I left him for a while as his skin went quite dark and I guessed he was due to shed. He eventually shed last week and had since eaten another 2 mice.

He has 2 hides at each end of the viv. One at the warm end and one at the cold end. He has a bamboo root and leaves etc for climbing and seems happy enough but injury can't get him out the viv.

I've tried a couple of times but he's just so jumpy. I tried to pick him up earlier but he went to strike. He didn't bite but I font really want to risk it. I personally don't think my brother handled him enough and I really want him to get used to bring handled as when he's out he loves it.

I'm really not sure of the best way to pick him up without stessing him out. He seems happy enough when he'd out it's just getting him out thats the problem.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

just go for it, just gently scoop him up if you hesitate and linger this could stress him out causing him to bite ect...
also it dosent really hurt when they bite just looks very aggresive. and if this does worry you, you could wear a thin pair of gloves.
start off with small handling sessions about 5 mins and then
eventually build up
hope this helps :)

If he is coiled up do
I just scoop him up as he is or just wait until he uncoils? Im not too fussed about him biting me I think it just looks aggressive and he's so quick it is a bit scary.
I think unjust unsure of the best way to actually pick him up?

Doesn't matter if he's coiled up or not. Gentle but confident scooping :)

also. try carrying something around with you for 24 hrs... like a sock or something. Pop it in his house. He will become used to your scent and should hopefully start calming down for you. Doesn't work for everyone, but it did work for me with one of my "adopted" grumpy corns.

maybe if you poke him with a stick first too, so he's not too startled about being scooped up, I do this with Sonny and he's only struck once and that was the first handling week when we were just getting to know him.

"Poke with a stick"? Now that's really going to encourage a genuine trust between man and beast. Come on, it is a Corn, not a Spitting Cobra.

If you are not sure if your snake is dozing or not, drum your fingers on the door glass and move your fingers into his field of view. If he's dozing he will become alert by following the movement with his head.

Think of it, if you visit someone you normally ring the doorbell or chap thhe door. Imagine visiting your old, deaf and grumpy aunty. dozing in her armchair and you sneak in and belt her with her walking stick to let her know that you have come for a visit.

must be just sonny then, cos he gets far more grumpy if i tap on the faun than if i just poke him, he rattles if i tap the faun but if i poke him he puts his head up as if to say "Hi mum! Playtime? HELL YEH!!!"

Hi and welcome - best way is to just got for it - once out and in your hands he will soon settle down. If he goes to strike, don't stop, or he'll learn that's how to stop you and will do it again! Just grab him (gently!!) and try not to hesitate! Good luck :)

lol! please dont do any poking of the snakes! :)
this is an exellent way to get bitten.
go for the gentle scooping, if coiled up great nice and easy, if on the move also easy just make sure
when holding you support the wieght of your snake (not too close to the head, they dont like this)

Hi, found this info really helpful as I have been bitten twice tonight by my newly adopted Corn, and have 4 neat puncture marks in my finger to prove it - I do agree it doesn't hurt but boy did it make me jump !! I think I hesitated a little too long on the first attempt and that made him uneasy. Might wear some gloves tomorrow and go for the scoop technique just to be on the safe side as I don't want him to think I am nervous of him.

I wouldn't bother with the gloves. They will probably carry a different scent and just add to the confusion. Stick with the risk of being brutally savaged as it will speed up the settling process.

You know now that it doesn't hurt but can make you jump just as a reflex action. So chin up and if you want the points, you must supply a picture of you being carted into A&E. We have had a load of false bite claims and have had to tighten up the forum rules on this matter.

You do get admission to the exclusive Bite & Poop Club if you score a double in the one session. (Picture is obligatory for bragging rights.)

Handled successfully today - picked him up no problems so hopefully that will be the last bitey episode !

Proof as requested although I wouldn't call it savaged lol !

good luck, just go for it, i have one who doesn't nip but does try and strike if you go in the viv, i gently pick her up from her coils and once in hands she's absolutely fine, defiately a trust thing between you and snakey, the snake needs to learn to trust you that you won't hurt it and you have to trust snakey that it won't hurt you

Hi all I tried again last night but as soon as I out my hand into the viv and went near him he went into the "s" position. I think maybe I need to wait until he is a bit more comfortable and just go for it. I didn't have any problems before but since he tried to strike a couple of days ago it's scared me a little. A bit silly really as I'm not really phased by other animals biting such as my dog and he can do a lot more damage than a corn. Maybe it's because I've never been bitten I'm just wary of the unknown.

I think it's just me being too hesitant. You reckon another go at scooping tonight or leave him a day?

Just do it, say to yourself no matter what, that snake is coming out tonight and do it. The longer you leave it the harder it gets.
