Posted - 07/04/2012 : 20:25:29 I have just bought a 7 month old snow corn snake and have been given a hatchling box with him and told that my 4ft Viv is way to big for a snake of his age and size, I have a heat mat under the box (PLASTIC BOX) and am using aspen bedding i also have a coconut cave and a small water dish. I am worried that this set up is not right for the snake but i just dont have enough money to buy a bigger viv yet HELP PLEASE. NICE AND HELPFUL ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE!!!!! |

Posted - 10/04/2012 : 22:11:25 feeding him twice a week is classed as power feeding which can cause trouble later on. its un natural for them to eat so often and theire stomachs to not have enough time to recover.
one pinky every 5-6 days is plenty.
theres no need to hurry his growth x

Posted - 10/04/2012 : 18:27:12 I would not feed him twice a week and use the advice smart bunny gave above. If you feed Thursday and Sunday he will only have 3 days in-between one of the feeds and it can take that time to digest. They tend to grow quicker when they move up a size of mouse. |

Posted - 09/04/2012 : 21:42:15 You shouldn't be feeding twice a week. Either a pinkie or 2 every 5-6 days or larger items weekly if the snake is larger. This is the guide I was given by Okeetee Mick when I joined:
Single pinks 6 days Snake = 4-15g Large pinks (2pink) 7 days Snake = 16-25g Fuzz (5-6g) 7 days Snake = 26-40g Small (8-10g) 7 days Snake = 41-80g Small x 2 (8-10g) 7 days Snake = 80-120g Mouse (18-20g) 7-14d days Snake = 120+g
Adult females after bromating are fed every 6-7 days. Adult females are fed every 7 days. Adult males are fed every 10 days.

Hi, this is a pic of my setup, cost about £50 max all in. My Corn is nearly 6 months old and seems very happy in here for now. Hope this helps. P.S. Moss hide is only on for shedding not all the time |

Posted - 07/04/2012 : 22:00:50 ditto all above- tho I would add that a 4ft viv would be dodgy this soon just because of the risk of escape through cable gaps, the space between the glass doors etc- you'd be amazed at what tiddlers can get through if there's a chance of freedom!! Get the plastic tub sorted with a thermostat and digital thermometer, lots of hidey places to make snakey feel safe and secure, no handling for a week til he's used to the new smells sounds and movements in yr house, (just go in to change water and spot clean any poops)read the stickies on this site which have been invaluable to all of us when we got our first snakeys and er.....
oh yes, congratulations on the addition to your family!!! |

If you do not have the money for all this stuff now you can always put a divide in you 4' viv. There is a post on here about this as well but not sure where it is. |

Posted - 07/04/2012 : 20:46:35 could do with getting that temp up cos he's eaten recently, try a towel over the top to keep the heat in, but dont use a hairdryer unless you want baked snake |

Posted - 07/04/2012 : 20:44:08 thermostat... tells the mat to turn on and off. really need to raise that temp a bit, has he eaten in the last coupla days? |

Posted - 07/04/2012 : 20:43:52 A stat is a thermostat that controls the temperature of the mat. Without one your mat can reach temperatures that are unsafe for snakey and possible risk of fires as well. You would be best to switch your mat off now and go and get a stat as soon as possible. Snakey will be fine at room temp as long as you don't have the windows open all the time. |
