Posted - 01/07/2013 : 10:15:44 As far as I'm aware, inbreeding for one Generation is OK. Any more and I'd stop because that's when problems could arise. In other animals, one generation inbreeding is generally accepted in most places as it's not too bad as problems don't arise till later on in the inbreeding. If you were to breed a related pair of cats and then breed two of their offspring together, you'd most likely run into problems. However, if you were to breed a related pair of cats and leave it at that, you have a very low chance of running into problems unless the parents for the mother and father were also related. Reptiles, you can inbreed more than once without such a high risk of problems but I wouldn't. I would only inbreed one generation really. I'm buying a pair of Stripe hatchlings off Oakleyman and yes in the future they will be bred but their parents weren't related so it would be single generation inbreeding. I am also hoping to keep a pair of my own hatchings and breed them in the future but once again, the parents weren't related so it would only be single generation inbreeding. Just my thoughts |

Posted - 01/07/2013 : 10:08:34 I don't have a problem with hybrids, it's not like your trying to mate a snake with a koala. If the two animals would be able to breed in the right circumstances in the wild then it must be ok. |

Posted - 01/07/2013 : 10:05:27 yeah I think I would do my best not to inbreed reptiles as I don't think it can be as healthy as two unrelated. I don't see why different pairs can't be sourced, so brother and sister are not breeding, there are plenty out there. I understand because with captive bred animals the gene pool is smaller, but the further unrelated the better! |

Posted - 30/06/2013 : 23:24:42 Personally, I would be very wary of inbreeding. One just needs to look at other species like dogs and cats to see where inbreeding has led us. It's easy to say "oh, that won't happen to us, these are not mammals" but how can we know?
As for breeding hybrids, opinions differ. I don't see the harm in it as long as healthy animals are produced, but some people seem to think it's a crime against god or something to breed something that is not "pure". Each to their own, of course, but I don't see the issue, especially since different species do breed in the wild. |

Posted - 30/06/2013 : 21:33:09 there are no rules, just common sense guidelines. Inbreeding is quite widely practised especially with new morphs and combinations. |
