Hi there, I've got a 10 year old whos mad on snakes and wants one for xmas. Being doing lots of research but can't make my mind up to get either a corn snake or royal python. (joined royal python forum laste night). He's always wanted a royal but will accept a corn. Never has a snake before but have been reading up a lot lately. Any advice from you guys out there ! I'm getting then impression corns are easlier but a snake is for life not for xmas so don't want to rush and choose the wrong one. Any one got both who can give me arguments for both. Really need help ! |

Hello
Corns tend to be a lot more 'hardy' than Royals, easier to keep and less fussy. Both species come in a multitude of colours, but Corns are usually cheaper (from £20). Royals tend to chill out a lot more while being handled, whereas a Corn is always looking for an escape.
Have fun choosing. |

I agree with all that was said above, have you and your son handled both species? |

I would think a corn would be more suited to a 10 year old, just because they are more fun. They are more active, easy to handle and don't usually have a problem feeding.
Royals are great too, but they are fussy, especially where eating is concerned. It is sometimes frustrating to sit wiggling a mouse in front of an uninterested Royal for hours, but have a talk to your son and see if he's aware in the work involved with a royal. If he's still up for putting the time into a more difficult snake to keep then there should be no reason he can't have one.
I'm glad you are offering a home for life too, but just in case this sways your decision- a corn averages at about 20 years, while Royals can live up to 40 years with appropriate care |

Thanks guys, I think a corn will be the better choice and more fun for him and me ! I've been advised a 30in by 15in by 18in high viv will be ok is this true ? I'm interested in a corn in which the shop has kept a full diary of eating etc Is this the way to go? How often should a corn be handled. I note it should be left for 48 hours after being fed. |

Good choice. Definately the more interesting of the two for a 10 year old. My kids don't even ask if Sherman (my royal) is out any more. He only wakes up when the kids are in bed.
Hang on. Maybe Sherman's onto something there . |

Good Morning and a very Merry Xmas, Ended up with a bloodred corn as the snake I choose has stopped eating. My Son is over the moon but were leaving the new arrival alone for a few days to settle in. I will post some pics when he or she has settled in. Cheers for all the sound advice guys |
