Hi,
Bella is due another pair of pinkies today.
What's the best way to feed her?
Last week I fed her in her viv, but I've been reading on here and other places that it's maybe not a good idea in case she swallows some of the aspen.
Should I take put her in a separate container for feeding (I've still got the plastic box she came in) or offer her the pinkies over a paper towel in the viv.
Is it ok to hold the pinkies in my fingers, or would it be better to use tweezers to avoid confusion of fingers=food. She pounced at the pinkies last time, which surprised me as this was the first movement towards me.

I'd recommend putting her into a little box and feeding her. You can use tweezers to feed, or a small pair of forceps or similar. If not try 'drop' feeding, which is where you just drop the pinkie into the tub with her.
Or use your fingers, you're not a proper snake owner until you've been tagged. |

We use cat litter trays to feed our snakes in. Easy to clean and great open space to take pictures and the like.
I have to admit I have fed my corns with my fingers, but it's not recommended. If I got bit I wouldn't be surprised. Get some tweezers to be on the safe side. |

definitely out of the viv, there's no risk of ingesting the substrate. a plastic tub has the advantage that you can leave the snake in there safely if it's a shy feeder or taking a while, and if neccesary cover it over with a towel to give the snake more privacy.
if you feed your snake in a tub and are giving multiple prey items (eg. 2-3 pinkies) i usually feed the next pinky as soon as the snake has finished the first one. when the snake has finished i leave them in there for 5-10 mins so they realise there's not more food coming when you put your hand in to get them out! |

I feed mine in RUB, its easy to clean and I can put the lid on and get on with other things while shes enjoying her lunch. |

Thanks for the advice.
Bella has now had two meals successfully out of her RUB. It's so small compared to the Viv I just put the whole thing back in the viv when she's had her pinkies so she can move on in her own time. Gave her something to climb over.
Defrosted the pinkies in a bag in hot water as per advice here, and it certainly made for less mess. |
