Hey guys i am just wondering why my UTH isnt giving enough heat.. i just got a lil thermometer thing from the petshop and set it on top of the substrate at the hot end and its only reading like 70o F but when i set it directly onto the headmat its boosta way upto like 90-95oF so any advice on what i should do? I ahev ordered a digital thermometer off ebay so should be here soon. Should i thin the substrate out is there too much that the heat isnt getting up.. i havent put it directly into the hide coz he just ate last night and im leaving him in peace. any advice would bbe GREATLY appreciated! Thanks ever so much!!

Any reptile shop near you. You will probably want a 100W mat stat. Habistat and microclimate are the two biggest brands.

Does the starter tank have small leg type lumps underneath it?
I've known this to be a problem in the past because heatmats work by tranferring heat through contact. So if there is a small gap between mat and tank it wont heat the tank very well.

If the tank is on a hard surface, try putting a towel or something similar under both the heatmat and tank as this will force the mat to contact the tank, which in turn will transfer the heat better.

Have a look on E-By for stats you can get new or second hand pretty cheap, Thin out the substrate and sick a polystyrene tile under your heat mat. Walla warm snakey.

I just noticed them lil leg things on the edges of the viv where it sits so i got a pillow cusion cover and set the UTH on top of that then the tank so the mat is literally right on the bottom of the tank now! Thanks for that Kehhlyr!! I would never have noticed!
