Hey hey.

So I have been trying to get Ziggy used to being handled, but he just doesn't seem to really be buying into it much.

Currently, I have him out every day (aside digestions days!) and he's out I'd say about 10 or 15 mins max, once a day.

I just wanted him to get used to the experience and not be freaky.

But I actually think he has got more upset about it. He doesn't particularly appreciate being picked up, but he was ok with it when I got him out - now he just seems more flighty and more worried

The way I do it is by opening his tank and putting my hand in there first, just so he knows I am there and it's not some great shock, but no matter how much warning I give him, he is still quick to hide.

I usually just pick him up trying attempting to be considerate of him, but confident in it.

Am I doing something wrong here? Is there a better way I could be doing it? I'm just not sure

I don't mind if he has a little zest and fire, but I don't want him to be scared, and I feel he is stressed more than just being cheeky.

And on the flip side I don't want to just not pick him up because obviously he'll never get used to it.... Catch 22.

Oooooh... the little monster just shed!!!!!

Do you think that could be why he was a bit flighty?

Yeah, corns can lose almost all their sight during shedding, enough to freak anything out really, then some giant 'thing' pics you up and lifts you miles in to the air - c'mon you'd be a bit sketchy too wouldn't you?

someone of the forums once suggested that i shud try feeding mystery both in and outside his viv once in a while. The theory is that being outside becomes a positive thing -- association to food. seems to have work. i can from time to time open his cage door and hell come out for a roam around. much easier to handle now. though he hides for a week when shedding so i tend to leave him alone

Thanks!!

Well, I feed him out of his tank anyway... He was just fed friday. I didn't realise he was actually going to shed, never noticed the dull eyes at all..... doh.

He's actually not shed very well (another issue le sigh), and I had him out to let run through a damp cloth, and I must say he was MUCH happier, and was squirming between my fingers. He was happy to pretty much sit there and let me run the cloth down him.

So on to the next drama.... off to investigate helping shedding.

in the theme of handling your snakes -- when you pick them up do they feel cold? mysterys body temp does seem very low. his thermal gradients are spot on.

Snake can often feel cold.
Human body temp is something like 37c, so when you feel a snake that's been sat on a 30c mat, although they are warm, they can feel colder because you are warmer.

Does that make sense?
