A friend of my boyfriend's has two corn snakes but he can no longer afford to look after both (lost his job) and we're going to take a look at them on Friday with a view to bringing one home with us. It'll probably the younger one, which I think is practically a hatchling, as it's apparently less fussy and shy than the older one.

Is there anything I should look out for when checking them over? Also, how do I go about finding a good vet for snakie, and does anyone know of anywhere that provides snake pet insurance?

Finally, I know about keeping a tight lid on the vivarium, ut my cats will be most interested in the new arrival - will constant STARING freak snakie out? Should I keep them away from him/her to start off with? I'm not planning on letting snakie out when they're around :)

I'm so excited!!

I have nothing - apparently his/her current owner does though, and snakie comes inclusive of all accessories.

What's a rub?

a rub is a really usefull box, and they are really usefull... lol.
Make sure the "inclusive of all accessories." include a thermostat, thats THE most important thing, other than the snake its self.
When your checking the snake over, look out for any damages to the scales, or missing scales, make sure if you pick it up that its flicking its tounge at you. check its general alertness, a hatchling won't be used to handling as much as an older corn so they will seem a little 'defensive'(for lack of a better word) when you move towards them.

I would keep your cats in a different room to the snakie to let him/her settle in for the first week, also you should try not to handle the snake in this time, just change the water daily and thats it, it can be very tempting to pick them up when you first get them but we just gotta be patient and wait :)

Im not sure about the vets or the insurance, i don't think insurance is a big thing for corn snakes really. But any Reptile specific vet will know what their doing when it comes to snakes.

Make sure you find out what the snake you get is feeding on, how often they are been fed & how much. Also if your boyfriends friend has kept any records on the snakes ask him for thoes too, they can tell you when/how they shed, last feed, how much they've been fed & everything like that, but if he dosn't have any records not to worry :)

Hope this helps & get some piccies of the little guy when you get him/she.

Thanks all. Looks like, barring illness or any other obvious problem, we'll be adopting him/her* on Thursday. Whee! I'm so excited!

*current owner has no idea of the sex, so we've decided she's going to be a girl ;)

I'm reading everything I can find avidly! I want to do this right, obviously. My boyfriend neglected to tell me that the friend and his family have kept reptiles for years and years and really do know what they're doing, so the new addition is almost certain to be perfectly OK :)

We named her last night; she's going to be called Bellatrix.
