Your thermometer probe needs to be inside the tank, either with your thermostat probe if the thermostat probe is inside, or under the warm hide if not.

Ignore the read out on your thermostat, always take the temperature from the thermometer, thats what its there for.

Thermostat temp markings are a guide and not accurate, Put the thermostat probe and thermometer probes together (use a tiny rubber band) and get a perfectly accurate temp reading then its just tweeking the stat until you get the desired temp range. The readings should be taken from inside the faun as close to the mat as is possible, touching the mat if its inside the faun.

Are you using a digital thermometer?

If so you put the probe in the substrate. I put mine under the hide as the hide will hold it down. You then take your readings off of the thermometer and adjust the thermostat accordingly.

my thermometer is this one here ---
http://s3.amazonaws.com/tc-photos/11442/product/standard/519791.jpg
so it has no probe -i was just concerned you see as the thermostat says about 88 degrees yet the temprerature in the cage is just over 70 and its a bit annnoying-as the thermometer hasnt got a probe ,its just sat there in the beech chips on the warm end, near the hide, the snake doesnnt seem too mind the temperature at the minute ,im wondering if ive put too much substrate in or something /.\

I've not used one of those dial thermometers. A lot of people have mentioned them though and from what I've heard they are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. If you want something accurate then the best you can do is get a digital thermometer. It will really put your mind at ease.
This should give you a good idea on set up:

Those dial ones are no good, you won't be able to accurately measure the temperature untill you get a decenet thermometer so its deffinitely worth getting a digital thermometer. I think you can pick them up for less than a fiver. As for thermostat placement, in a faunarium it is fine either ontop of the heatmat or inside the faunarium.

You really should get a thermometer as soon as you can though as them dial ones are absolutely rubbish for heatmats. Although that said even when they're placed on the wall measuring ambient temp they're still usually off.

I put about 2 inches of substrate in but under the hide in the hot end I literally just use enough to cover the mat. I try to find a balance between keeping Spot warm and giving him plenty of substrate to dig in. You will notice the difference in readings when you get a digital thermometer or 2, the dial ones are useless.

I have just over an inch or so on the cool side, but only a thin sprinkling over the mat, or where the part of the tank covering the mat.

I wouldn't rely on your 'crap' thermometer at all, I had one and it was almost 8 degrees out and not in any uniform way either it was waving all over the place where as the digital thermometer was holding steady. If you can replace it as soon as possible for digital. And monitor the cold end too if you can, make sure you have a good range of temperatures for your snake to regulate its temperature correctly.

For instance my viv has Cold end:19.9 Hot end surface:26.5 Heat mat temp:27.9 (I have three thermometers, that's how precise you can get temperatures with digital thermometers, they only move by about 0.02 of a degree rather than a ball park figure of the dial thermometers) with thermostat tweeking you can get a perfect temperature setup within a few hours
