hi all, this is my 1st post and after reading other threads i'm a little worried. i bought my son a snake starter kit which came with a book! the book said not to handle your snake for at least 48 hrs after 1st introducing it to its new home. so we left it alone for 76 hrs but after reading other threads i'm a little worried as it's still really skittish when we handle it! we got it last sunday and tried feeding it today but when it encountered the fuzzy it decided to burrow under the substrate and has been there ever since. should i leave it alone for another week or carry on handling every night? cheers in advance |

Is the snake a hatchling, if so then skittish is just how they are, they calm down in time. As the little guy is still quite frightened I would leave the little guy alone for 7 days, before attempting to handle, you should notice the difference once he is comfortable in his enclosure. Another thing to mention is feeding them on their substrate could result in the snake swallowing a bit and blocking their digestive system. I always feed in a seperate tub with just kitchen roll on the bottom, its safer and gives you a better view of the amazing process of swallowing the mouse. Oh and be prepared for severe snake withdrawal not handling the snake, its worse than giving up smoking. |

You could try not only warming his meal but also squeeze out a drop of blood from the mouses nose (yes, I know, yuk!) then just pop him in the little tank and cover him with a towel. Leave him for a while somewhere warm to see if he eats. I had a little non feeder and it was the only thing that worked with him. We can give you lots of ideas on non feeders so don't worry too much. |
