Within the next few weeks I will be getting a Corn snake. I've been learning about them but still have a few questions. I have a vivarium about 24" in length and about 10-12" in height, is this too small for a corn snake? Also its made of wood with glass sliding doors with ventalation at the back, i have a light on over one side and i know i would have to get a guard for it, and an undertank heat mat which covers half of the vivarium, with the light and heat mat on the temperature is about 30c, If i turned the light off during the night the temperature drops to around 22c (as i live in scotland) is this too cold? And for the substrate is kitchen roll okay to use? As i dont want to use newspaper as the ink may harm the snake, but i seen that they like to burrow, so would i maybe be best using some woodchips instead? Im just worried incase the snake digests some of the substrate and get impaction or just ill. Wow this is long, Thanks in advance. :]

Depends on the size of the cornsnake,

have a light on over one side and i know i would have to get a guard for it, and an undertank heat mat which covers half of the vivarium, with the light and heat mat on the temperature is about 30c, If i turned the light off during the night the temperature drops to around 22c (as i live in scotland) is this too cold?

yes those temps are far too low, however i dont understand why your heatmat wont reach the necessary temps alone, im in Scotland too and all my snakes are on mats alone. Could you tell us how the mat is setup how the temps are regulated ie are you using a stat and what you are using to monitor the temps.

is kitchen roll okay to use?

Kitchen roll is fine to use, also you could use aspen / aubiose / hemp quite safely with no impaction problems so long as care is taken during feeding.

And welcome to the forum.

Thanks. And thanks again for the advice, much appreciated. The breeder im getting the snake from sells different kinds, like a crimson, lavender, alery etc are they all generaly the same size? And once the snake was fully grown would i have to buy a bigger vivarium as i read they can grow to around 3-5ft? And I think because the head mat is underneath the wood which is around 1-2" thick, Do you recommened anything to do to make the temps rise?

yes, put the heat mat in the viv on the base, and you must regulate the heat with a stat. By doing this you will reach the required temps no problem and then you can ditch the light as you only require one heat source not two.

No matter what morph you get they can all grow between 3-5 foot so for adult you would probably require a 36" viv.

edit - what size of corn are you getting? if it is a hatchling you may well have to provide lots of cover for the corn to allow it to feel secure in the viv.

Ive been into the petshop, and the owners breed the snakes, Im guessing the snake i would be getting would be around a few month old, as for cover, what do you mean? And for the heat mat to be inside the vivarium, and having using kitchen roll as a substrate wouldnt this burn the snake if it was sitting there for a long period of time, i also read they need a basking spot, wouldnt they need a basking light?

At a few months old these will be small snakes. Snakes can stress easily and in some occasions this can be brought on by large spaces, so if you are planning on using a 2 foot viv for a baby, although I would suggest this is to big and instead go for a faun, you will have to provide lots of hides, plastic plants, loo roll tubes etc as places for them to feel secure and hide away.

The only place to keep the mat in a wooden viv is in the viv itself, as you have noticed the heat doesnt get through the wooden base so it must be in the viv, and by using a thermostat to regulate the temps from the mat your snake will not burn.

Corns do not need a basking area.

Hi and welcome.

I use kitchen roll for my corn snake and he likes to hide between the layers and seems very happy with it.
