Contiboard is regularly used, beech isn't on the no no list and MDF will need treating to make it waterproof or even a laminate putting over it. Good luck with it and don't forget pictures.

i've used mdf in the past for vivs and it got acrylic sealant along all the joins, painted with emulsion, then varnished with a water based floor varnish (satin so theres not too much glare).

99% of bought vivs are made from mfc (melamine faced chipboard) of which contiboard is a brand name

and lots of people use beech chippings as substrate

i think melamine/contiboard is the best option and the most straight forward build-wise
look out for reduced 'damaged' flatpacks of wardrobes in your local Ikea for a cheap source of wood!!!

Hey stotty, dont know about Ikea's around by you but in Bristol you can visit on monday mornings and they put out all the old display stuff which may be damaged in the trolleys by the underground carpark and you can get as much as you want for free, really useful for all types of diy not only viv building lol good luck with it
