Hi Everyone,
Been reading this site for a while, and plenty others as well as a few books on corn snakes. I first got really interested in keeping a corn snake over a year ago. At that time I tried to convince my OH to let me get one, and we compromised on waiting for 1 year. If I still wanted one after that, we'd re-visit it.
Well, it's over a year, and I still want one. So a weekend of low key nagging with a lot of buttering up, and I've ordered myself a starter vivarium set. Now all I need is a hatchling!!
I've noticed a few people talking about the Doncaster show, would that be a good place to try for a hatchling if I fail at the local pet stores? I've checked a couple of places for stock, and there are some available. However, this is a commitment for the next 20 years, so I want to be happy with the snake I choose.
Any advice would be welcome.

Even though you are from the east coast of Scotland  welcome to the forum.
Edit: the only rep shops that are worth looking at across your way is Serpentus Exotics Dunfermline and Strictly exotics Kircaldy in that order |

Hey and welcome.
I only got my first yesterday. First thing you need to do is decide what Morph of Corn Snake you want. That helped my narrow down what i was after and where to look etc. I narrowed mine down to three Morphs:
1. Carolina
2. Okeetee
3. Bloodred
I then looked in my local area and at local breeders to see what stock was avaialble etc. A shop in Leeds had some Normals in so went there yesterday and came away with a Snake.

Notes: A good site to uses is Ian's Vivarium Morph Guide to see what you'd like. Bear in mind some Morphs are rare and expensive.
AC Snakes and Cymru Corns are two breeders i know of, and think both will be at the Donny Show. I would have got my Okeetee from AC Snakes had i not found a Carolina locally. |

Thanks everyone.
Now all I've got to do is wait... my hatchling setup will hopefully arrive sometime this week, however I'm off on holiday at the weekend, so can't get a snake till I'm home.
A few questions in the mean time:
If I buy a hatchling from an internet seller shipped through courier, how does this tend to work?
Are they ok being shipped like that? Will they need any special care when arriving?
I know you should leave them alone in their new home for a week or so before handling them, but do you need to give them a health check on arrival as you would if you were looking at one in the store?

I just got 2 corn snake hatchlings couriered up to me in Glasgow from Leicester at the weekend and they arrived safe and sound without any problems. You just need to make sure that you use a licensed reptile courier. This was the one I used -

Hi and welcome. Have fun choosing your new snake.
In regards to your starter set-up, make sure it includes a thermostat and digital probe thermometer as these are often omitted from starter kits and are essential pieces of equipment. Have it all set-up and running before you get your snake as it means so much less worry if you have any problems. |

they'll be plenty to choose from @Doncaster, though one vendor i'd personally avoid is the one selling non-feeders and well, basically, rejects......trying to get the sympathy vote with 'give a special corn a special home' that's really NOT the best way to start owning a corn!!
vendors i can recommend are Paul (biglad) vetdebbie and adsclark, Jamie (doogle), Nige (cornmorphs-though he may not have a table next show) and AC snakes |

Hi, thanks for the info.
I basically did the same hatchling setup as recommended by LittleMick's 101 sticky. Just changed a couple of the decorations etc. All the essential gear is there however.
I've been looking at various breeders sites tonight, and noticed one saying hatchlings shouldn't be given chlorinated tap water, but instead bottled drinking/spring water. Is this correct? I've not seen it mentioned anywhere else.
Driving down to the Doncaster show isn't really my first choice for getting a corn - it's a very long way, and I only passed my driving test earlier this year. I have family down in Derby, but that doesn't make the distance less. Are there no shows or meets in Scotland?
There's a local pet shop I'm hoping to try out on Thursday, they're called Edinburgh Aquatics, but when I was there last they had what seemed a large range of snakes/spiders/lizards etc. Hoping they'll be better than the garden centre I went to at the weekend - which had 4 corns, but none had water in their bowls :( |

as far as im aware there are no shows in scotland but if im wrong happy to be corrected.
i give all my snakies tap water, if i can drink it so can they.
good luck with finding your first snake (always the fun part) will warn ya though one leads to 2 then 3 and so on :D |

Hi
Welcome to the forum.
Breeders will probably be the best bet, they normally keep records of feeding, shedding etc. and can give you more detail about the snakes they have for sale. For a first time owner this is quite important, it's not a good idea to take on a hatchling that won't feed!

| hi just to say im over the bridge from you and i went to Serpentus Exotics in Dunfermline,a great frendly bunch of people,i just bought my corn for £50 and had her a month now,i sent and email to the one in kirkcaldy but still havnt heard a reply from them x |
