Been on this site loads and finally pluck up courage to get registered. Had a ghost corn for nearly a year and we are doing very well, it's a good 3 foot long and never had problems now just recieved a Californian King snake at over a foot long to the family also got a cat, chicken, tropical fish and pond with koi, orfe and goldies.
Question
My corn is looking rather edgy and stressed since the king has moved in, how close would they be able to smell or sense each other even though they are in seperate viv's? At the moment the King's viv is directly above the Corn's, Should i have them further apart to keep the corn happier? I will try and get the photo of the set up on later.

yeah
move the king, i guess you know what the king part means then :P
don't let them even see or hear each other move, the cali will be in hunt mode and the corn will be in 'oh no wtf was that' mode

Thanks for that. Yes it does make sense especially as the King will think it's dinner time if he get's a whiff, so what kind of distance are we talking about? different rooms?

Your corn may well simply being edgy as well because of extra stuff and movement around him.
I'd imagine that with a kingsnake in a viv on top that there's been a bit more activity in front of his viv, with people looking at the king and suchlike.

As it stands all snakes are different, I have kept kings and corns in close proximity in the past with no ill effects.

Hi there.

I have a king above a corn, and under 3 other corns and a hognose. But at the same time I had a king which was unsettled and so moved him away from the other snakes to a different room to see if this would calm him down. It didnt however.

Now moved the King to a different room, will give it a good few weeks to see if the corn calm's down and returns back to his normal behaviour. Maybe try the same room but at the two end's and see what happens. thanks for all your interest.

Hi, I'm glad you have finally joined us. We are a friendly bunch and nothing to be scared of - well, apart from that Kehhlyr bloke, bit of an odd one him lol. (Just kidding K - love u really)

I wouldn't worry too much about the king stressing your corn out. He probably just needs to get used to the new smells and extra activity as Kehhlyr says.

However, it is always good practise to keep a new snake away from your existing ones for a quarantine period so I would keep them seperate for now

So after two day's eveything is returning back to normal as far as the ghost is concerned he is not looking so edgy and has calmed down quite a bit. The cali doesn't care where he goes and is just going with the flow. Will keep them separate for awhile as the wife doesn't seem to mind having a snake in the bedroom.

heya and welcome

hopefully they'll both settle down given a little time, though when i had a psychotic Japanese ratsnake he managed to upset everything with his prescence! we have different boa species, rats and corns all in the same racking system with no problems

cornsnakes, ratsnakes, bullsnakes, boas and day geckos
