Hi folks,
I have built cobus a new viv and changed the substrate he uses to the wooden chippings. I put him in last night and went out for an hour or so and when i came back the glass was steamed up inside. I can only assume this was because i stupidly forgot to put some vents in the viv walls which im going to do next week. (he is back in his old tank at the moment)
Problem i've come across is the temp on the heat matt isnt as warm as it was in his other tank. In the old one it was about 28/30c but in here it is roughly 24c
I have a thermometer at the back of the viv and a temp sensor at substrate level and both say the same. Could the new substrate be the cause of this? Do i need a new more powerful heat mat?

I've actually just seen the post about Beech chippings needing to be a thin layer above the heat mat!! Doh! Just ordered a stat so he doesn't burn himself what with him now being actually on the heat mat rather than it being underneath the tank. Should be good to go in a couple of days :D |

Its totally irrelevant whether the heat mat is under, inside, on top, or glued to the left buttock of a wilderbeast it needs to be controlled by a thermostat. I can assure you almost 100% that the heat mat is running hotter than 30oC, I have had a few heat mats of various sizes and without stats they have all exceeded 40oC within an hour of plugging them in. If your getting a reading of 28-30oC on the substrate surface in your faun then the mat is running too hot, if your getting it using a dial thermometer your in real danger of causing illness to your snake. Snake will burrow down to the heat, so you take the temperature reading from the closest point that the snake can get to the heat source, so in the faun its the bottom of the faun, thats what should be reading 28-30oC thats where your thermostat probe should be too but you dont have one so your temperature can do whatever it pleases and there is nothing you can do about it. Its not just a burn risk that we use stats for its also that been too hot causes neurological damage to your snake. I advise you to switch off your mat until you have a stat, the summer temperatures at the moment means it will be fine just dont feed until the stat is installed and the temperatures are controlled. |

I have taken him out and into his old tank anyways which only has a small heatmat and the temp sensor is on the heatmat which is reading 28 at the moment so he should be fine. Thanks for the reply :) |

I wouldnt deal in shoulds when it comes to animals, I can say for sure all mine will be fine. I cant stress enough just how important a thermostat is even for just a small mat, those little ones seem to have the more wild temperature extremes. |

At the moment with summer temperatures your snake will be absolutley fine short term without a heat mat, the only thing you wont be able to do is feed your snake as they need a few extra degrees for digestion. |
