Hello all!!
My girlfriend has had a garter snake in the past, and since having the thought of us gettin a snake a corn snake seems to be the perfect option, thing is i need to get a vivarium but would rather get one with the full set up but would also rather get something decent to start with rather than ending up buying twice. also want it with a cabinet
any help opinions or comments are very much appreciated

Hi, really depends on how old your snake is, you do not want to put a baby corn in a viv that is far too big or it will freak out. For a very young corn I suggest a large faunarium which are very reasonable in price and move to a larger viv in time. Sure a lot of members will on here will offer good advice. Good luck. |

I have four at present all very young in their own fauns and have two 4th vivs set up and ready to go, but will wait until they are a little older before introducing them to each other and to vivs of that size. Can understand you not wanting to waste money and there is a feeling that as long as there are plenty of hides it is ok, but I will wait as the last thing I want to do to to stress them out. |

Hi, welcome to the forum.
It's really not a good idea to put a tiny hatchling in a large vivarium. They are nervous of large open areas and so tend to go off their food when kept in too big an environment. They are also very good at escaping from vivs, you'd be amazed at the size of hole or gap between the glass that they can squeeze through, not to mention the difficulty of trying to find a tiny hatchling in a large viv. They feel much safer and so do far better in smaller confined areas.
You don't have to spend a fortune, a hatchling can live happily in a small rub (Really Useful Box) or in a tuperware food container from your local supermarket, you just need to add a few ventilation holes. I've got my hatchling in a 5 litre clip lock clear plastic sandwich box, it cost me a couple of pounds and will do him for months.
If you really want to use a large vivarium then you could always section of a small area for the hatchling and as it grows you can increase it's living space until (after several years) it is big enough to have access to the whole viv. |

Can someone show me what RUB they have? surely they need light and water etc which a small tupperware box would be too small?

i've got juveniles in cricket tubs, 4L, 9L and 18L RUBS, adults are in 33L but mainly 50L ones it's much cheaper than buying fauns/vivs |

the clear plastic ones allow plenty of light in and they can see out too just like a viv, and you just scale everything down with the size of the snake |

This is the only pic I've got of mine, but it gives you an idea of the set up. It's an air tight clear plastic clip lock box that I got from Poundstretchers, I just had to drill the ventilation holes.

That's a fantastic picture thank you, but where is the heat mat? the light? the water source? Etc or do hatching not need anything like that? |

The hear mat is under the tub (look at the top left you can see it). There is a water bowl in the bottom right of the tub (its a blue circular one) They dont really need an artifical light source. |

Hi,and congrats on deciding to get a corn snake.
Thats the same type of box as I have for mine:

Natural daylight is the best type of light for corns, they don't need artificial light. |

Read this thread here, will tell you everything you need to set up a hatchie. You can obviously use a RUB rather than the Faun detailed etc. http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9878
You will feed them Pinkies to start with. Increase the size of the mice as they grow and get older. |
