we had our cornsnake Lenny at the end of Dec and he`s now about 7 moths old. He`s had two sheds since we`ve had him and usually feeds well. Recently i`ve been giving him two pinkies every 5-6 days with no problem and his poo is normal. The last batch of pinkies seemed much bigger but as the shop told me that after the next shed i could probably try him with his first fuzzy, I still gave him two of the larger pinkies and he seemed to manage them ok but it took longer to eat them. however 48 hours later he regurged the two of them. When i phoned the reptile centre they told me to wait 2 days and try again. I did this yesterday - again Lenny took them quickly but they both came up again today. I`m going back to get a new batch of smaller pinkies tomorrow. I`m concerned reading here that i didn`t give him long enough after his first regurge before trying him again but it`s a good shop and that`s what they advised. i`d be really grateful for any advice please

hi -i`m using the set up they sold when i bought Lenny. The faunarium is 18x12x7 and the heat mat is 11x6 and i put it so that 1/2 of the floor is heated, substrate and water dish. He has two hides -a bark one at the hotter end and a cardboard roll one at the cool end but after reading all the advice on this forum before i bought him i could see that a stat is recommended but when i asked the shop i was told that it definitely didn`t need a stat - so its unstatted.

The recommended time before feeding again is 10-14 days. This allows the stomach juices that were lost during the regurge to build back up again. Also no handling, only go in to do water changes. After this period, I would offer just one of his normal sized pinkies if he manages to keep this down then you can try 2 on his next scheduled feeding day. If you want to give him a larger one, you should be ok to after this but only give him one.

i'd get one. the mats themselves don't have a max heat so they can keep on getting hotter. you could dissapate it a bit by putting a bot if slate or something between it and the faun (ive got it stuck to a glass plate under the faun) but if you don't keep an eye on it then it could reach high temps. i've seen mine go up to 46 when testing. stats just help regulate and offer peace of mind. it is up to the owner tho.

I'm sorry, but for a 'good' reptile shop they are giving you very bad advice :( I would definitely stat the mat - even Corno moving the stat probe too high off the mat allowed it to go up to 34 degrees in my faun, I dread to think how high it would have gone if there had been no stat at all. Also, as you have now seen by posts on here, after a regurge the snake should be left totally alone except for water changes for 10 days. Our pet shop was recommended to me... but they still gave me awful advice (including that a stat was not necessary) which I knew to ignore thanks to this forum!!

Hi - thanks to everyone for all the advice. I`ll leave Lenny alone for 10 days and then try him with one smaller pinky to see how it goes.Yes,common sense tells me you must be right about the shop. I`ll get the stat asap and let you know how he is after his next feed. Thanks again

Its so bad that they can even call themselves a reptile centre, disgusting that even the basics they have got wrong. You do find these shops are owned by someone and their answer to everything is 'I've done it this way for 20 years' without realising things change and the hobby moves on for the better.

On the regurge front it may just be the unstatted heat mat that has caused the regurge, if the hot end is too hot they wont go to that end and sit in the cold where they cant digest. This seems to me to be the most likely cause. As for the safety of your snake I would switch off the heat mat and leave the snake at room temperature until you have a thermostat. Dont worry about not having the heat on, corns deal with the cold quite well as long as they are not digesting so you just dont feed until the mat is running safely.

We've all had advice before thats been cronk, it happens but you soon learn to stick to your guns with these people and do it the way you want.

hi - thanks for all the advice. i fed him one normal sized pinky after 10 days and then another feed after a week. That was last week and everything`s been kept down. I`ve now got a stat and thermometer and i`m going to try him on 2 pinkys tomorrow and then he should be back to normal routine. thanks for all the advice again
