Ive had Munki for just over 2 weeks now and he's still not eaten. Ileft him alone for the first week to let him settle in, tried to feed him on the 7th day and he was having none of it. Left him alone for the second week and he's still not eaten again. The reason im a bit worried as i dont actually know the last time he ate. The shop i got him from said they didnt have a feeding record because the wholesaler didnt give them records. They estimated him at being about 6 weeks old. When i got him i measured him at 365mm long. He's in a 18x12" faun, lots of cover, 2 hides, 1/2 heat mat at between 27-29 degrees (stat controlled). He doesnt seem that active still either, only coming out for a few minutes now and then. When i feed him i defrost pinkies in warm water, brain them and put in the cool end hide and cover the faun with a teatowel for privacy.
Is there anything else i can do? Should i start holding him to get him comfortable with me? Any help massively appreciated! |

you can try super heating with a hairdryer, concentrating on the head. (the mouse that it) rub it in tuna brine. feed out side the viv and wiggle it at the opposite end. rub it with chicken, marmite. stab its tummy. soggy.
2 weeks shouldnt be a problem, when you try to feed next weigh him and make sure you weigh him every time to atempt to feed and keep a eye x |

Excellent, thanks for the advice! I havent tried any of those things yet apart from super heating so will give it a try and get some accurate digital scales (if i can get him to keep still for long enough!) Really hope he starts eating soon, seem tobe constantly worrying about him at the moment! |

Anopther thing to try is covering the feeding box or viv (which ever way you feed) with a towel/t-shirt or something to darken the area they are in. Leave them to it and see if it eats. It might be a nervous eater. |

any shop worth its salt would not have sold you an animal until they have proof it was eating. From your signature picture its unlikely that Munki is only 6 weeks old and I think its been feeding unless you have really tiny hands it does look a bit bigger than a hatchling.
Milks are quite jumpy snakes and also require more heat than a corn snake (I think, I dont have one so just remembering research) I think they need to be up at about 30-32oC so its too cold in your setup. Double check it with a milk snake caresheet, I think www.thekingsnake.co.uk caters for milk snakes and try sneaking the meal in with no fuss on a piece of kitchen roll at night and just leave it in overnight. |

Thanks Lotabob. I was a little uneasy about not knowing anything about his history but once id seen him i couldnt leave the shop without him! Suffice to say i wont be going back!
Ive had a look at the care sheet and it does say to have it a touch hotter! Ive turned the stat up and Munki has already come out! Hopefully he will be a bit more active and finally eat something so i can sleep a bit easier at night! The shop also said you cared for milks exactly the same as a corn, another point they seem to be lacking knowledge!
Thanks again, you've made my day! :) |

So i tried feeding him again on friday, warmed up the pinkie, rubbed it in tuna brine and marmite, brained it and stabbed the belly, also covered over the faun. Went down the pub for a few hours and when i came back it was still there. Decided to try a slightly bigger pinkie, put it in boiling water to defrost (which got it so hot it turned a bit white!) did the same as before (tuna brine, braining, marmite, stabbed belly) swapped them over and left him to it. Hour later it was gone!!!! So happy, thanks everyone for all the advice, hopefully go as smoothly this friday!! Thanks again everyone!!! :) |

Sometimes a snake won't eat something if its too small. They don't see it as prey. How big is munki? |

Glad he fed for you. It is such a relief. I'm not entirely sure that Georgina meant try everything at the same time but if it worked, Meh!!.
On the handling front, I would avoid handling for at least 3 successive feeds. I would only take him out for weighing and then put him straight back in his faun with minimum fuss. |

no i didnt mean everything at once, buy hey if he liked it! lol
on the next feed i would try one of the bigger pinkies just warm. then one of those things. ie the tuna. then if that doesnt work try the marmite. if not then i would just leave it over night. then wait a week for feeding whether minki ate it or not.
im extra happy that munki ate! xx

Opps! I did wonder if you meant to do them all at the same time, but i was getting desperate so thought 'what the hell!'!! Munki is only about 365mm. The shop i got him from gave me the first 4 pinkies as they said thats what he was used to (how they knew this im not sure though as they said they didnt have any feeding records!) I got some new ones sent through (small and large pinkies) and he obviously likes the large pinkies!
Thanks for the advice about handling, was wondering about that. He still seems super nervous and didnt know whether to just pick him up for a short while and let him get used to it over time, or leave him alone. Leave him alone it is!!
