When using heat mats you hardly notice it. Now heat bulbs/lights/ceramics is a different matter altogether. |

It makes very little difference if any when adults as long as you just use heat mats which is all an adult corn snake needs. |

I've never plugged my corn snake in. Though I run a stack of snake vivariums and spider tubs and have barely noticed a difference in my electric bill, I'm pay as you go too and as long as you dont run out all the time anyway then I dont think you'd have a problem. |

Yup your heatmat needs to cover at least a third and a maxiumum of half your viv floor space as i said in the other post i use the ultratherm 11x11 matts and in a 2ft viv it covers half the floor space in a 3ft it covers around a third |

You only need a bigger heat mat when they are adults because they are in bigger viv's. The bigg the viv the bigger the mat |

i disagree my JCP has 120w of I/R bulbs an they barely use anything.
the best way to look at how much power viv heaters use is the simple fact that the thermostats are only on 5amp fused plugs which means there pretty low power consumers.
when i set up my 2 vivs 1 with mat an 1 with 2 I/R bulbs before u put snakes in i turned all the house electric off an turned the stats right up to see what the meter did an then compaired it to other things.....
my conclusion was a tv on standby used more |

Let's do some maths.. ("yay!!" I hear you all cry!)
As far as I'm aware, my current electricity price is around £0.15 per kWh. This means I can use 1kW of energy for one hour, at a cost of 15p. So, if we take a 15W heat mat for example (adult sized!), it looks like this:
Cost of running a 15W heat mat for one hour = 0.225p (£0.00225)
Cost of running a heat mat for 12 hours a day (assuming thermostat management) = 2.7p (£0.027)
Cost of running a 15W heat mat for 12 hours a day for a year = £9.85.
That's next to nothing really |

I guess my bulbs use alot then because I do not run them on stats. They reach and stay at a constant temp providing the 120f hot spot that I need. Maybe I should consider using a larger wattage bulb and using a stat. We are on pay as you go for electric and since using the two bulbs and the two UV lights my electric has risen by at least £5 a week! |
