I'm currently really annoyed at my microclimate thermostat!

Who designed these things, really!? A fiddly little dial that doesn't tell you exactly what temperature you're setting it to? And even then the thermometer on it seems inaccurate.

I've had mine set up perfectly and a digital thermometer on it for a while but today I've just checked it (as I do at least once a day) and seen that the temp has gone over 30! Luckily Ara is sat at the cool end under his water bowl right now and I'm now in the process of correcting the temp.

I've got a digital thermostat (ThermoControl II) on Aysha's viv but even that isn't accurate so I have to stick a thermometer in that one and get things sorted.

Seriously...why is it so hard for the reptile world to get things right? Heat matts without a thermostat on them, thermostats that don't measure temps properly, heat bulbs without guards or proper fittings sold with them... They're just out to get more and more money I know but it really annoys me at times!

A thermostat can only be as accurate as its set up, a thermostat that's set up in away that the probe isn't positioned correctly or can be easily dislodged will never give a accurate reading, u shouldn't have to keep adjusting them I'd there set up correct. I use both mats an lamps on on pulse prop stats an dimming stats an have never had to adjust them since they were set up. Bear in mind though a basic mat stat which is on/off control will always have a few degree fluxuation.

The main one giving me problems is under a plastic faun, the probe for it and the probe of the thermometer I have on it are elastic banded together and placed in the warm hide under the substrate, but I can't secure them further than that as I'll need to get them out again and tape is a bad idea. (they don't move too much, Ara is only tiny.) Aysha's (boa) is currently waiting for the installation of a ceramic and when that's done I will be using wire tacks to hold the wires in place, but that one hasn't fluctuated - it's just inaccurate!

I think my main rant is that they're not designed with ease of use in mind at all - a little knob with clearly marked temperatures with individual 'degree' markings is surely not so hard to make?

Buts its down the positioning of the probe. With mats it shouldn't be to bad tbh, but the markings on a dial stat are only there as a guide. U should always set it up using a digital thermometer or temp gun. Setting pulse an dimming stats for lamps an heat emmiters its differant as the probe won't always be where the hot spot it but to the side. But as long as its set up using a digital thermometer in the basking spot an the probe fixed to the viv side near by the state will always maintain the hot spot right.

Also to get a more stable temp in a rub/faun I'd have stat probe outside the faun/rub an the thermometer probe secured to the base inside, that way the stat will react to the mat temp better an hold better temps.

That would explain it Lupi - we did have to move Ara's a bit when we put the other viv underneath.
