Hello,
Sorry if this seems like a newbie question but I am curious to find out the sex of Apollo for sure.
I have read that it can be guesstimated visually, by counting scales of the tail or tail shape but I am not experienced with either method and I have heard varying reports of success with both. (I have attempted to count her scales from vent to tip but I may have to wait for her next shed for an accurate number. Got 123 the first time and 120 the next?? Apparently under 130 is supposed to be female but I'm not convinced about accuracy of this.)
Can popping only be done safely on hatchlings? Or is it a method used for small snakes as well? How big does a snake need to be for probing to be safe? (guessing maybe bigger than my little wormie)
Also, does anybody know of anywhere around my area (Harrogate) who is experienced at sexing snakes who could sex Apollo for me when 'she' is big enough?
Thanks for all your help :)
P.S. 'She' has been weighed today and is only 20g but is over 10 months old, probably closer to 11months.
P.P.S. I may be able to get a few pictures of her tail/vent area for people to have a look at if it would be any help, but she has just eaten so would need to wait a few days before I can handle her.
Thanks again. |
