Hey guys, sad that my first post is a negative one but thats my fault for keeping quiet. Anyway I wanted to grab some opinions on a couple of new developments on my snake Ruidi. Inherited him from an unloving home around a year ago and have had no real problems. Vet wasnt able to give me an age for him but reckoned he may have been as old as a teenager. anyway hes about 5ft long and has maintained a weight around 580g over the last year, stays in a 4ft by 1ft tank on aspen shavings bedding with a controlled warm end at 30C. As far as I can tell from elsewhere on the forum this is the ideal setting for him. Anyway to the problem, 19 days ago he ate a mouse as per usual and then the next day appeared to start a shed cycle. Unfortunately 2 days later he vomited the mouse which I quickly removed and spot cleaned the area. Following this I tried leaving him be for the 14 day period that others have suggested elsewhere. During this time he shed (10 days ago), that day I took him out and thoroughly cleaned out his tank (soaked with bleach overnight before changing out the bedding). Continued to leave him the full 14 day period before trying to feed him again (3 days ago) which was successful however shortly after feeding I noticed the following lump on him:
I didnt want to disturb him however as he had just eaten so Ive given him his two days digestion perdiod. Things though now are even more concerning, he appears to have entered another pre-shed after only 10 days and the originally white lumps is now smaller and black looking, and unfortunately Ive noticed a second black lump on the opposite side of his head:

Not really sure what Im dealing with here, likely trip to the vets I think. Was hoping some of the more experienced folk could offer an opinion on what this could be and if any could recommend a decent vet in the Glasgow area that I could go to with this? Thanks in advance

It could be a burn from the heat mat |

Could he possibly have got his head stuck somewhere and damaged himself pulling himself free? He could be going into shed again as a repair mechanism. |

Im fairly sure it wouldnt be the heat mat, Ive got that on a thermostat and I regularly monitor it. I can't think of anything sharp in the tank that he could have nicked himself on but some other people have suggested the shed thing is a repair response - I wasnt sure if this was something that he could do? The only thing is he does like to lift the waterbowl from underneath everynow and again, he might have managed to get stuck that way somehow but I dont recall seeing anything that suggested that. |

If he has managed to tug a scale the wrong way, that would send him into shed. As for the burn I doubt. But you mat is a teeny bit hot I would knock it down so it stays between 27 and 29. Is it on the out side, or does it feel like its in his throat? |

Thanks for the advice re heat. Thankfully he isnt too stressed at all and tolerated me getting close for a little feel. The tugging theory seems reasonable as in both the cases when you look at them from the correct angle the scales are raised up a bit away from the rest of them, like they could have been forced in the wrong direction. Both certainly seem to be on the outside of him, just like a surface defect - I dont think there any bigger than an be seen externally. |
