Hi all, as most of you know I have 2 5ft+ adult Corn Snakes. For any who down't, they're in my sig :)
Anyway, Sakana the female Hypo is at 900 grams in weight and approximately 5'6". I know she's overweight as I know my uncle over-fed her before I got her off him in Feb 2012.
When My uncle got her she was very underweight, weighing in at about 86 grams and being 3ft long. Her stomach was sunken in and her spine was showing badly so he started her off on smaller feeds like 2 fuzzies a week, 2 rat pups a week and then onto small, medium and finally large mice. By now she was about 4'5" but still very skinny, weighing in at 200 grams at this size. So he started feeding her 2-3 large mice a week because she kept begging, sometimes even rat weiners and small rats! Obviously on this diet she soon became over weight but he didn't realize because he thought she was still hungry as she begged after each meal so he gave her more.
Now like I said, she's 5'6" approx and weighs in at 900 grams now. She is very squishy around her back end, her front end and head is fine it's her back end. She has fat build up near her vent but hasn't got tires, I don't want her to have tires.
Basically my first question is how often should I feed her? She's on 1 large mouse every 2 weeks currently but I feel even that's too much for her as she's not losing any of it, any at all.
My second story for you all is about my Butter Male, Cereus.
Now he weighs even more than Sakana as he weighs in at 925 grams(around about) but he isn't squishy at all. There is nothing to squish on him, just muscle. I know he's still heavy and he is slightly smaller measuring 5'2" but this is still overweight. He hasn't got fat build up or tires but he is pretty heavy for his size. He's not large in body width, about 2-3" round and his belly is flat not sunken in or expanded.
He's also fed on 1 large mouse every 2 weeks.
Anything else I should be doing for them? Cereus looks in proportion but Sakana looks large and has the flattened circle appearance when she's layed out or curled up, whereas Cereus doesn't...
I get them both out daily and as I have a high sleeper bed(it's old...) I let them roam the bars of that for up to 1 hour whilst keeping my eye on them both obviously but they love it because they can climb properly. They have branches in their viv that they only use them every now and then during the day, at night they generally only climb the lowest branch and on the bottom of the viv.
I have pictures of them on my bed for you to all see, I'll post them in the 'Corn Snake Posts' section :)
Thanks for any help and sorry for the essay, I felt you'd need the whole story for both snakes to be able to help me out
P.S. For all those that thought Cereus was big for 2 years old, he is. I've talked to my uncle and he was actually hatched in '08, not '10. He got Cereus and the male he's now got mixed up lol So my corn snakes are actually a CB08 Male Butter Corn Snake and a CB 06 Female Hypo Corn Snake. |
