Hi, I wanted a cornsnake as a pet, am not into breeding or having loads just wanted one as a pet and ended up being offered two. Was told they are a mating pair and live together etc so thought nothing of it and took them in. Have since been told many conflicting things, some say it's ok for them to live together as they always have and i could cause stress by splitting them up (they sleep in same hide togther etc) and it's fine to keep them together as long as i split them up to feed. Others have said that if i keep them together the female is gonna keep breeding, could end up egg bound and could die. I don't profess to be a snake expert but i had 4 snakes in the past and they all lived happily in the same viv and they were 2 males 2 females and yes they had the odd clutch of eggs but i just disposed of them. All i want is what is best for the snakes so if anyone can help me with advice i'd appreciate it
Personally I don't cohabit and wont but there is a big thread on co-habbing somewhere for you to make your own mind up on that. Even if you do decide to keep them together, if the female becomes gravid then it is always recommended to take the male out to avoid stressing the female. You also need to have a set-up spare in case of emergencies.
Personally I don't think it's fair to put the female through the stress (and possible danger) of breeding/pregnancy/laying etc if you have no intention of incubating the eggs. If you keep a male and female together they will breed, and this is tough on the female.
I kept my breeding pair in the same viv and found that they didn't mate unless they were separated for a few weeks before hand. But like others have said its personal opinion. :)
