So I gave Ophion her first feed with me today. She is 2 years old this month and was fed a rat pup last Wednesday with her previous owners.
He told me it was better to feed rat pups to a female because of the higher fat content (with regards to laying eggs I assume), and also gave me two mouse pinkies in case she was reluctant.
I decided to defrost both the rat pinkies and see if she'd take both. I don't know whether to go rat or mouse at this stage, but judging by these pictures, would you say the pinkies are too small for her? Also if you look at her back in the first photo, would you say she's also slightly underweight?

In the second pic, would you say this is the proper sized bump that should show from food? I just want to get any idea of whether I should feed her mouse or rat. If rat is it rat pups, and if mouse then what size?

She looks absolutely dinky for a 2 year old!
Looks a nice size bump for her though, yep She might be able to take a small adult mouse... though size varies a lot depending on where you get your snake food |

Generally all corn snakes should be fed mice and really try to avoid rats as mice are much better for them i thin its to do with calcium levels? (someone more experienced will be along shortly to correct me, but def mice not rats)
Also i wouldn't say she is underweight judging by the shape of her, how much does she weigh? but tho corn snakes do vary very much in size she is about the size of my 1 year old??!!
Lastly its a good sized bump but i would try to stick to mouse fuzzies or hoppers and see what kind of bump they leave.
Hope ive been of some help :) |

Hi, thanks for the replies.
With regards to her age, the funny thing is she was advertised as a year old. But when I went to pick her up they gave me her baby card (she keeps them all) and it said her D.O.B. was July '10. She does seem quite small compared to some others I've seen. I haven't weighed her yet but maybe I will after she's digested her food. Length wise I'd guess she's 20 inches long, but I'll measure her properly in a couple of days.
I'll need to buy her next food so I'll take a look at fuzzies and hoppers. I saw someone mention a good way of telling what size to get with regards to the size of their mouths?
I'm just a bit worried she's slightly triangular looking in the top of the first photo. If she's had two pinkies today, when should I next offer her a meal? |

wait 7 days for her next meal, general rule for size of food is for the food item to be about 1 1/2 times the widest part of the snake. |
