The first, i admit im a right numpty.... was working out costs for getting a hoggie, know it wont be till next year, (like to be organised!) now i KNOW they need a higher heat than Fudge, but i forgot that last night as i was thinking about them sharing the stat. Before my brain cell clicked, was making sure it would work out when i realised that people use multiple mats to one stat with only one probe....... How is that safe? |

No question is silly, just means you dont know
From my understanding a stat can only control one temperature so if you were using it for lots of snakes they would need to be reps that require the same temperatures as each other so your new hoggie would need a stat of his/her own |

Yeah, i knew id need another stat, just had a thick moment when i was looking at doing that, and i knew about same temps of other mats. But still dont get how rest are safe with one probe? |

lol looks like i was having a thick moment too lol blame it on lack of sleep
I *think* you just put the probe in the middle of the mat as generally all mats have consistent heat all over them but ideally you would want a thermometer probe in each rub to make sure and just turn the stat to what the the thermometers are saying? but again im not an expert and never tried it that just my understanding |

So long as the mats are the same brand, size, wattage etc it is safe to run multiple sources on one stat, they should maintain simillar temps, each mat should still be monitored with seperate thermometers just to make sure. Obviously the more mats you have the more inconsistent the temps will be and you can only go up to the maximum wattage the stat allows. |

I have run up to 4 same sized mats, 11 x 17 @ 20 watt, from the one Habistat 100Watt Mat Stat. As long as the mats AND vivs are the same size and rating then it is not a problem. The stat probe must be securely mounted so that it cannot be dislodged. I used cable ties and strap of wood to anchor it.I prefer this to melt glue-stick. All vivs were also monitored with dual probe digital thermometers, also securely mounted.
If you know what you are doing and the equipment is up to scratch, (no old or second hand cracked laminate mats) then it is OK.
The Habistat literature suggests this as a method for multiple vivs. If in any doubt, use individual stat, mat, thermostat set up for individual vivs. |

Ok if you want to use 4 mats on 1 stat where do you plug them in as theres only room for 1 plug, or is it obvious and old age has finally caught up with me. |

As said everything has to be the same, mats have to be same brand size wattage etc. Same set ups so either all under rubs/in vivs with same species or species req same temps. U couldn't do it with say one stat powering two mats but one under faun an one in viv as it just won't work. One mat has the stat probe but all mats still need digital thermometers one. Also its not just a case of buy a viv an mat an plug it in, u need to make sure mats are both off an left for mat temp to equilise before u turn them both on other wise they will heat up an cool down uneven. |
