I'm new to keeping snakes and I got my first Corn about 2 months ago. I got her when she was about 3 months old. She's been feeding fine from the day I got her and is on double pinkies at the moment.
She has always been active at night and slithers around exploring and sleeps during the day as normal. Last Saturday I did a full clean out as usual and changed some of the decor in her vivarium to keep it interesting for her as this is what I was advised was a good idea by several different books.
The problem I am having is that she went into her new hide on Saturday and has not come out since. She's been in there 4 or 5 days now! Well... I know there is always the possibility she comes out at night when I'm asleep but considering I would normally see her every night before I go to bed and now I don't has me concerned.
I normally feed her on Sundays and I left out a pinkie for her that evening. The next morning it was still there which is another reason why I believe she hasn't been out of the hide to see that it was there. So I took the pinkie out and disposed of it. Yesterday (Wednesday) I decided to lift her hide to check on her and when I did she was curled up inside. She lifted her head when I disturbed her and seemed as alert as she would normally be. Feeling more settled at that I put the hide back down and let her be. Later I then put a new pinkie in and lifted the hide again and offered it to her and she took it no bother at all.
So I don't know what accounts for the sudden recluseivness. Anyone got any ideas? She seems to be in good health and is eating etc although with not having been out of the hide that means she isn't drinking which normally she would drink every night as I usually see her at the water bowl. Her temps are all fine as well.
Anyone any ideas? Feeling rather concerned as I don't know if this is normal behaviour or not. |

Could it be that she's shedding; if so that would pretty much explain all of her symptoms. Her skin should have gone paler and duller while her eyes went cloudy, but depending on the morph this can be difficult to see and if she was hiding from you for four or five days you may have missed it anyway as it clears up a few days before the skin actually comes off.
If it is just because she's shedding, she's almost certainly still coming out for a drink while you sleep; some can get very shy and reclusive during this time and will wait for you to leave before they come out.
If you know she's not due a shed, however, for example if she shed recently, then I would be more worried |

Most likely that she is going into blue - when did she last shed? Totally normal behaviour from them at this time, and best to just leave them to it - although I always have a cheeky peek or two just to double check they are OK - I just don't get them out unless I've done so only to realise then that they are already in blue! |

As above - most likely going into shed. I take it she hasn't shed with you yet - and you've had her for 2 months, and she's only a baby = shed is very much due :-)

Thanks for all the replies folks. You have done a lot to ease my concern :)
She has never shed with me yet in the time I have had her. When I looked in on her on Wednesday I couldn't really tell if she looked duller or had cloudy eyes but then again I only lifted the hide enough to see where she was and if she was ok, it was still pretty dark under there. The fact she took the pinkie from me I assumed was a good sign anyway that her appetite is ok.
I'll keep a close eye on her over the next few days to see if she sheds. I don't want to disturb her too much which I suspect is what would be advised anyway so if she hasn't come out in a few more days I'll look in on her then to see how she is.
:)
Edit: She is a hypo Carolina :) |

She's got a good appetite to have eaten for you, many snakes won't eat in shed.
I choose not to handle mine, but some people handle theirs in blue. She should be ok, if you just carefully check on her. I've got a hypo going into blue now - and first thing I notice with mine is the change in behaviour - they start to hide, and become inactive.
Yours would have gone dull, you might notice that the colours won't be as bright as usual. Then the eyes turn misty at first, then, for a day or two, really milky. Then they clear, colours and eyes go back to normal, and then, couple of days to week later, they shed. You'll know it's imminent, when the snake suddenly becomes active again. She'll start rubbing against things, pushing her nose on glass, yawning, etc., anything to start the shed. You might get to see it, if you're lucky, but they mostly do it at night... Don't be surprised if she doesn't poop, until she's shed, they often don't go when blue.
Good luck :-) |
