I thought i would post these pictures showing why I think guards are essential.

If this was a unguarded lamp it could have resulted in the corn being burnt very badly if it had decided to wrap round the lamp and stay there...

Brilliant pictures to illustrate a point.

But be wary of having a guard with a younger snake too.
I had a guard/light once - and he managed to get through a gap in the top and got stuck up there.
Luckily the light had long been off and I saw it immediately and removed the light and went straight back onto a heatmat.
Just watch out if you have a guard with big-ish holes and a small snake - They can get through VERY small holes.

Good post, sorry, cba to log in and saw it was purple thought i might aswell post.

I don't use a heatlamp, so i don't need to worry but good post for those that do, and sadly, dont use gaurds.

More to the point, how's scales going to get down??

Hi,

thought I should share our story here.

Last Sunday we found our baby Corn snake burnt to death inside the light guard.

The origional guard was mounted on two steel rods leaving a lage gap at the top. This all fell to bits when we replaced the bulb. The guy from the pet shop came out and replaced this with 4 self tapping screws - quite flimsy and still will gaps. In hindsight I wish I had fixed the bloody thing myself, but being new to snakes we did not imagine this could happen. I can see your guard is very securly fastened and safe.

Even worse when we contacted the shop they we totally unsympathetic,
deny any responsibility and even suggested we had dropped the Viverium??????. We are seeking further action. But this doesent help
Little Cornflake and my partners and sons broken hearts.

RIP Cornflake.

Charlock, my heart goes out to you, your partner and sons. It is hard enough to lose a loved pet, but for it to be like that must be awful. I really do hope you get somewhere with the pet shop accepting negligence because at least then you could feel some sort of closure about your little corn's death.

xxx

My heart goes out to whoever found the snake and had to deal with picking him up and removing him from where he was found. Without going into great detail, I happen to know how it feels to find a snake dead and then have to do what is necessary. I truly am sorry this has happened to you and I hope this will not deter you from keeping snakes. In fact, I am hoping to read here soon that you didn't give up wanting to raise snakes, and hopefully at some point you will come and tell us you brought home a snake.
