you want one that covers a third to a half of the floorspace as I am sure you already know gaz. I am not sure what size they are manufactured in but I would have a look on ebay or the eurorep website I would imagine a 17x17 would do either viv

a 17x17 would probably be ok - obviously there would be an inch gap but if you had that inch gap at the end and moved the mat an inch towards the warm end then it would be ok - its what im going to have to use in mine

What manufacturers make 17 x 17.

Just had a look at habistat and they only seem to do 17 x 11 or 23 x 11.

Thanks

I had this problem as well :/

I use a 23x11 for a 48x15 viv, it looks like it covers half the floor space when in fact it only really covers a 3rd if you use maths.

I have no idea what size would be good for the 42 inches one as it's such a bizarre size!

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

Gaz

As I was cleaning out my viv today, I thought I'd take a couple of pics which may be relevant.
As a spin off I finally built up the courage to drill the holes I needed, as cables were coming through the front meaning the sliding door was fractionally ajar...I had an escape for a day during the week!

This is a VX36 with 17x11 Habistat heat mat.

The pics show:
top left: general fitting (gleamed from many threads here)
top right: size of mat compared to viv floor (lino rolled back)
bottom left: habistat probe and therm sensor coming through into warm hide area
bottom right: hide in place - I have little / no substrate in here

With the mat in this configuration, I've managed to create a heat gradient.
Outside warm hide there is substrate which gets deeper towards cool end.
The mat does also fit rotated 90 deg, but then there's less than 1/3 floor space heated and harder to get a gradual temp drop.

Hope this helps
Simon

I meant to also say that I have bulbs in larger viv (VX48) at the moment, but when I was researching I thought the 23 x 11 mat was about right, so will probably work for your larger viv.

Thanks alot for the post Simon and the pics.

I think that the 23 x 11 will be okay also.

Cheers

In my setups I have some granite bathroom tile over the heat mats to spread the heat out.. might be an option for you to get the gradient your looking for
