I came to this site in search of specific handling instructions for my young creamsicle corn snake. It bite my teenager and then a couple weeks later it was striking at me. Our Californian king snake was so friendly that I am actually afraid to begin handling this one.

It is social. The cats feeding bowls are just outside the aquarium and the snake clearly enjoys the company... i imagine that it was a shock to him when we wanted to handle him. We have had him 4 months from baby.

So far what i think i understand is that thier bite cannot hurt me and when he bites i should not immediately put him down and that soon enough he will become use to us.

then i read that although the bite does not hurt it may still draw some blood. I have Hep C... so this means it will have to be my teenage daughter who does the socializing.

How am I doing with my information so far ?

You are right in the sense their bite cannot do any damage, although some people have said it can sting sometimes, but it's only a momentary one, kind of like having an injection. It also is normally felt more in the big adults.

It is just a matter of doing more socialising with him unfortunately, that can be done in the viv to start with until snake feels a bit more comfortable as well.
Easy way to start is just by putting a hand into the viv and moving things around a bit, so he can start to learn that you're not gonna try to eat him or something.
Also, we recommend putting a t-shirt/gloves/pillow case or something similar to that with your scent on it into the viv as well, to help snakie get used to your smell.

You say you have had him 4 months, How big is he?(roughly). What size tank is he in? (could you measure in inches please). What hides/substrate do you have?

And Hi and welcome to the forum.

Hi thank you for your replies. I like the put your scent in the tank idea... had not thought of that. He is longer tan a pencil and only as think as my index ( as a girl ) not very big. Snakey lives in a 1x1x3 tank a regular good size tank.. has a tree and a skull for shelter and water and the chips... I recently threw in some toilet paper rolls for a change as i am going to clean his tank soon. My other snake i use to put into my tucked in shirt as i clean.. this one isnt ready for that. .... no one has said anything about the possible drawing of blood and my Hep.. except for the good advise of some clothe gloves or a t-shirt another great idea.,... thank you for the invite to your group and your advise... I do appreciate it !!!!!

When you say a 1x1x3, is that in feet? If so then it'll be to large for the snake. Which in turn could make him nervous, which could then lead to feistyness and/or aggressive behaviour.

Roughly how long is the snake, when you say a bit longer than a pencil, i'm guessing around 8-10 inches.
