Hi there all.

Just ordered a new viv and some bits for my corn snake, and I'm wondering if there's anything I still need to get hold of.

If an experienced person could cast their eye over it and let me know, it would be massively appreciated!

So far, I have the following already which will be taken from the old viv.

Heatmat (Algarde 14 Watt 11" x 11")
Heat lamp
Dimming thermostat for the lamp (habistat)

What I've just ordered now consists of

4' wide viv (1'2" deep, 1'6" tall)

jewlers cabinet lock

Matstat (habistat)

rock outcrop hide

2 analogue thermometers to check the temperature gradient

some biovines - for a none arboreal snake, she does enjoy climbing a lot!

I'm looking to reuse the existing hide for now, but it's a plantpot, and is far taller than it really needs to be.

Also, I'm considering using some slate pieces for basking rocks, but I have no idea whether these are suitable or how best to disinfect them if they are.

Any suggestions would be welcomed - I think I've covered everything but I'm not yet certain.

Many thanks,
Alex

I would scrap ordering analogue thermometers, they are absolutley useless. Get digital, they are no more expensive and far easier to use.

Oh and a guard for your light.

Corn snakes don't bask so just concentrate on getting adequately sized hides, only just big enough they like wedging themselves into small places.

have noticed you have2 heat sources you will only require one for your setup, so either go with the heat lamp or the heatmat.

Should you decide to go with a heatmat you will require a larger mat so that the mat covers at least a third of the base of the viv, the one you hve just now covers about a quarter.

And as lotabob has said dont use the analogue thermometers they are useless get yourself a couple of digital thermometers (just a few quid from ebay)

You could get some artificial plants for your snake to hide in too. One of mine loves her plants wrapped round the exoterra vines. Rocks are ok, no heat rocks though!

Some good sdvice there! Thankyou all.

I already have a light guard in the existing viv which will be moved into the new one, so I think I will be sticking with the light for now as I will need to order a new heatmat.

For hides, she currently has one made from an old plantpot, and a rock outcrop styled one on order. The plantpot one is pretty much the perfect diameter for her, although it is a little on the tall side.

I've ordered the new hide as it is pretty much the same size, so she should be happy in it.

She has some artificial plants already in the current viv, but because of the smaller floor area, they're kinda squashed into a corner.

They will look miles better in the new one...

The BioVines in the current viv are attached with string through holes in the top. I'm not certain its the best way to secure them, so I'm not keen to do that in the new one.

Any better options? The viv is all wood and quite solid.
