Just got a 4/5 year old corn from a breeder who has lots and lots of corns, pythons and more. He's in great health, but he has never had a heat mat in his life !!! His owner told me she never gives her corns any extra heat and said she has always found them to be much healthier without as long as the house has is fully central heated. Looking at her stock and how healthy all the snakies looked ,I'm at a loss to see why my new snake would want a mat now at four and a half foot long ?

| How hot was the house? I'd melt if my house was heated even to the lower hot end temperature. Then again corn snakes really are bullet proof, you can do just about anything and they will do OK. |

If it's always warm enough to not need a mat, then nice that the corns don't have a cooler end to go in........ [:s}

Only heated to I would say to around 20 C , not sweaty. Only posted really to see if any one else has heard of corns being kept successfully without heat pads ? |

How strange. I would have thought the main concern would be that there was no way to change from cool to warm side as the whole tank would be the same temp. So where would the snake go if it wanted a cool end?? Although if the house was around 20c that is what Nimbus's cool end temp is so I would have thought the snake would have needed a higher temp in the warm side?
Nimbus spends equal amounts of time in his cool end as he does his warm end.
I just wonder why a breeder or multiple snake owner would just decide not to use heatmats? Very strange indeed! |

| if the vivs were stacked then maybe a warm end from a viv below heated one side to be warmer?? im with kehhlyr and louise, youd definitely want a warm end/cool end scenario no matter how warm the house is. other wise the snake has no scope to actually regulate temperature, but like i said, a viv below with a good warm/cool end could act like a heatmate and transfer the warm end upwards. |

I did think that but by the sounds of the op the person does not use any heat mats on any of their corns, not just that one  |

yeah i thought that, but as they keep "pythons and more" as well, they would DEFINITELY need some kind of heating i guess so i figured it was a possiblilty. |

most small time breeders i know tend to keep their stock in racks with no cool+warm end.personally i do like to give my herps a choice but im not against people that dont use mats and bulbs as i have removed the mat from my cornie cookie's viv as he never left the cold end,maybe each snake has its own personal preference just like us.
ps.sorry eeji i was doing 4 things at once when i wrote original earlier i was in middle of shifting my reps from kitchen to the attic  |

most (most likely all) breeders will use some kind of heating in a rack.
As for keeping on top of another viv and using that as a source of heat, I did that with a frog on top of a beardie viv with no trouble :) |

Big comercial breeders such as BHB Enterprises who fil SnakeBytes tv dont use mats the heat the room to a certain temp.
Personally i would worry about a snake without a mat in my house because i cant say someone will always be in if the heating breaks down! |
