you can buy a faun set up that has substrate , water dish , hide and a heat mat and thermometer , all u need to add to this is a stat probe , habistat ones are good as this keeps ur temps at a safe ranch (i tested a mat unstatted and it reached 40 degrees, so vital u have a stat in your kit) then all u need is ur new snake . As for holidays , it just depends if u have someone that can look after it for u . im away in september for three weeks and our family arent so keen on snakes , so i am boarding all four of mine at a reptile shop for somethin like £2 a day , they provide food etc . The boas we could have fed before we go and then just get the parents to come change the water , but if we had a power cut , it trips a switch and wont come back on unlike some circuits that just automatically come back on , so we thought this would be a safr option . |

Didnt realise you could board them at a reptile store. I know there are a few people from York area here, does the Leaping Lizard provide this kind of service? It is also where i am thinking of getting my snake from. The brother inlaws partner gets all his stuff from there. |

Simmy,
Good questions, helps me out a lot with the answers too. I still haven't decided whether I'm going to source everything from my local reptile shop or not. That's if I get a snake at all.
I have a query to add: Do snakes make a lot of noise at night? I ask because I currently live in a studio flat. I know they're nocturnal so if I have a snake that's constantly rustling around it might be worth waiting until I have a seperate room to house it in so I can get a good night's sleep!
Thanks |

Short answer. No.
We have our snakes on aspen bedding and its very quiet. Even when there is a slight rustling its not something thats going to wake you up or stop you from getting to sleep. I did have one of mine of beech chippings, which did make a little bit of noise when he was moving about (especially shedding) but again, it was minimal.
But no, a corn snake is definitely not going to wake you up in the middle of the night! We even had one of ours fall from the top of its viv (mildly hilarious) and we only saw it, didn't hear it, because of the aspen. |

This has been so helpful! I have one question to add. I know for the 1st week I have my snake I'm going to have to leave it be to adjust. Do I continue it's feeding schedule as normal and only disturb him for that, or should I wait the whole 7 days for him to adjust and de-stress and then do the 1st feed afterwards?
EDIT: Sorry, also when you store it in your RUB to eat or to clean the main tank do you need to make holes in the top or just keep an eye on him and leave the lid ajar?
(thank you so much for your help!!) |

You should leave him to settle for the whole seven days, no feeding until after that! :) |

Ok. Fish tank has gone. I'll be getting my snake next weekend. I've seem some starter packs at my local suppliers. This includes every thing but the thermostat. Is it the Habistat Stat Mat what i need? Upto 100W? |

The Habistat mat-stat is a good thermostat, i use 2 of them and the temp range they keep is brilliant. Sometimes starter packs are a false economy, just make sure your not paying for pointless stuff and also that it has the essentials. They rarely have stats but you need 2 hides, a waterbowl, a bit of something to climb and just a small faunarium if its a hatchling. Avoid the vivarium starter packs as they are far too expensive and not the best way to keep hatchlings. If its an adult your getting though a vivarium might be your best bet. |

Thanks for the info.
I've checked one shop the starter pack was for a young snake. Only thing missing was the extra hide. Going to a different shop at the weekend so will see what they have on offer. |

Ok, so Sunday will be the day i go shopping for a snake. I am going to order the Viv and accessories today/tomorrow ready for the weekend.
I check my local store with regards to what their start up pack includes it included:
1x Exo Terra Faunariums (Large) 1x Heat Mat (7W) 1x Strip Thermometer 1x Hide 1x Water Bowl 1x Corn Snake Book ?x Pinkies 1x Bag of Substrate
All for......... £69.
So i did some looking around on this site for supply websites
I used the Surrey Pet Supplies site and added the follwing to my cart:
1x Exo Terra Flat Faunarium - (Medium) 1x Habistat Heat Mat 7W 1x Habistat Mat Stat Thermostat 1x Komodo Habitat Humidity Gauge 1x Hobby Artificial Bark Cave With Two Holes 1x Exo Terra Reptile Cave - Medium 1x Exo Terra Feeding Dish - Medium 1x Exo Terra Silk Plant Abutilon Small
All of this totals at £50.42.
I have missed off the substrate and food as i'll get food when i get the snake, and substrate i wont use until i know what Snake Poo / wee looks like (as advised by others on this site), so will use paper towels in the mean time. I have also seen the probe thermometers cheaper on ebay than that site.
Am i missing anything??
EDIT: Also what is a Royal Corn Snake? The store had two of those in, but not seen them mentioned on any site (not even Ian's Morph Guide). |

I goggled it. It directed me to RFUK. A lady in my area asked the same question. Apparently its a marketing ploy, and its actually a Normal/Carolina. £39.99 though.
Going to Leaping Lizard in York on sunday to see what they have. May email them before hand to ask them what they have before making the trip to look at them. |

I don't think that you are actually missing anything from your list in fact if anything I would not bother with the humidity guage. As far as I'm aware corns do not generally need higher humidity so no need to measure it.
If you are getting a young snake I would suggest the small exo-terra cave over the medium. They like to feel secure and they will fit into the medium up to a year old or more. Another great inexpensive hide is the half coconut shell which again would probably be better (& cheaper)for a small corn than the Hobby bark cave.
Just remembered - a long set of feeding tweezers/tongs - will save you getting mouse scent on you and they won't associate your hand with feeding time. And on the subject of feeding you may want to do it out of the viv? If you do then a RUB is all you will need and the RUB is also useful for when the viv/faunarium needs a proper clean. If you go this route you could probably dispense with the need for the feeding dish.
Hope that assists

Just thought: You may find that the large faunarium works out be better value in the long run and if you have two hides, a water bowl, some foliage and maybe a small piece of bark/wood it's surprising how quickly the large one fills up. We have had our two corns since they were 6 months old and they are now just over a year and the large faun is still fine (I am just looking at moving up to a viv). If your snake is a hatchling you can partition the large faun to make it smaller which is useful.

Thanks for that Andy. A few points..
Humidity - I thought i should get one for shedding time? Or should i wait to see if there are problems with the snakes shedding?
Hides - I will take them off my list and buy then when i buy the snake. Just to make sure i get the correct size etc?
Tongs - Great idea, thanks for that
RUB - Yeah i was planning of doing that to start with in case there were problems etc. With regard to the feeding bowl, do i not still need that for water? or is there a specific water dish?
Sorry for all the questions people. Though once i get my snake i can see more questions coming your way lol
EDIT: I will up it to the Large one as advised, its only a few quid different |

With regards the humidity I think wait and see if you have problems with shedding - I've only experienced one bad shed so far. You can always put some damp moss in a hide if you get problems but I don't think the guage is necessary - but there are others far more knowledgeable on here than I who may come a long with more information.
Good idea to wait and see what size snake you get but if you are looking at a young snake then small hides will be great. To give you an idea ours are just over a year old now and measure about 2'6" (75cm) and can still fit in a half coconut hide.
Andy
Feeding dish - personally I would give this a miss but that is because I feed outside of the faun/viv in a RUB. You definitely need a water bowl and this is different to the feeding dish. For a snake a year or under the medium exo terra water bowl is good. |

Thanks for that Andy. Revised all items (see below) and its come to £48 ish excluding the hides, and with a Larger Faunarium.
1x Exo Terra Flat Faunarium - (Large) 1x Habistat Heat Mat 7W 1x Habistat Mat Stat Thermostat 1x Zoo Med Digital Thermometer (same as i saw on ebay 50p difference) 1x Liquid Crystal Thermometer (for the cooler end) 1x Exo Terra Water Dish - Medium 1x Exo Terra Silk Plant Abutilon Small
Deffo looking to get a younger snake. Local shop has a selection of younger snakes, No older than a year as they are still in fairly small RUBs. So wil acquire the hides when i buy the snake and ask the store what would be best etc. Thanks everyone, i can officially get excited about the weekend now! |
