No you do not need a humidity guage. Corns do not need specific humidity. Only to aid shedding IF they have difficulties
2 save £££££££, honestly, all you need in the way of hides is empty card board boxs, toilet rolls cut in half, upturned plant pot....
I would personally save the commercial hides for when your snake moves in to a bigger viv an has stopped growing . Or you will be constantly having to upgrade in size. Also, if snake poos on it, easy to throw away and replace it. |

Thanks for the advice on the hides. Sounds like a better idea. Plant pots are cheap enough. |

i did a sneaky 2day. Went in to homebase. Asked if they had any terrocotta pots that were broken....if you can find one small enough that is unsellable they will either give it to you or sell for pence. Alas they did not have anything 2day. |

Ooh exciting times for you. Hope the week doesn't drag too much! As mentioned, toilet rolls are fab for snakes. If you get a hatchie then the little plastic tubs you get microveable puddings in are great hides too,all you need to do is make a little arch way in them and you get to eat the pudding too. |

Thanks! Cant beat pudding. As i've said looking to get one no older than a year old really. Just emailed the store over in York to see what they have. The one local to me in Harrogate has some Normals @ £39.99 (bout a year old judging by their size).
Im not really fussed about fancy Morphs as i love the colourings on the normals. Only Morphs i really like are Bloodreds, Okeetees, Lava's and Diffused's. Mainly because i love the red colours of the corn snakes!
EDIT: Hypo wouldnt be too bad either |

Sorry for always seeming to double post. Just had another question pop into my head.
Heat Mat - I'll be getting a faunarium and i've read somewhere that you put this on the outside and under the box. Is the heat mat safe on the wooden stand that i'll be putting the Faunarium on or does something need to be under it? I've read some put it on foil, polystyrene, even tiles? Recomendations / advise please. |

Heat mat should be okay on the wooden stand. Sometimes, especially if the ambient temperature in the room is low, there can be problems in getting the inside of the faun up to the right temperature. That is when you can put foil or polystyrene or even a towel below the mat to try and increase the temp in the faun. This is less of an issue when you move to a wooden viv and the mat is inside.
Remember that the thermostat sensor is placed directly on the heatmat and the digital thermometer probe is inside the faun in contact with the floor above the heatmat. This way you can almost disregard the temp set on the thermostat and concentrate on the actual temperature achieved in the faun.

Thanks again Andy. Help is much appreciated!
EDIT: Just made some of my own hides. Im not sure if they are heavy enough. Or big enough. But they only cost a quid. Colour coded for hot and cold. Thoughts?

Killjoy Silk is here
You can't have any sticky tape in with snakes, if they get caught on it it will stress them out, and tear their skin. Electrical tape nearly always has sticky edges a little bit and the adhesive degrades too and turns into a tacky gloop, snakes will poke their noses at everything and if they lift an edge you've problems. Another thing about them is they are quite big, if you're getting a hatchling then you'd need to pack them out with substrate or dry moss, if its a bit older then they will be fine, be prepared to see things everywhere that you can turn into hides, garden centres become snake centres. |
