Hey I'm new to this forum. I have two corn snakes, one I aquired today (YAY!!) and he is a one year old anerythristic striped motley corn named Pan (Pantalaimon). The other I've had for two years and she's a hypo het lavender corn named Lyra. And they both live in their shared viv. Note: I hope to breed them one day... :D

I also have a parsons russell terrier (poppy), a bedlington terrier cross whippet (basil), two cats (tom and willow), a bearded dragon (iris) she's my sister's though, a budgie (sky), a tank of tropical fish and a koi carp pond. lol. life is fun ^_^

Couple of questions, how do you post pictures? and what do the numbers with points mean/how do they work when you see them in people's signarures? i.e. "1.0.0 corn snake called billy"? O_o?

Hi there

you can upload photos on photobucket and use the IMG code when you edit signature

1.0.0 = 1 male
0.1.0 = 1 female
0.0.1 = 1 unsexed

Yep, mamma pretty much covered it for you
Hello and welcome!

If you are cohabbing your corns, make sure your female is well upto breeding weight; there are lots of problems that could come about from premature breeding, including mega vet bills and death

Thanks for the welcomes and answers :) About the breeding, the pet shop owner said it would be around another year before the male would try anything, and she probably be bigger by then. She eats well, so I'm not too concerned about breeding weight, and I'm not going to consider it for a while yet :)

Lets see if this works:

complete and utter rubbish!!!
a typical example of a shop wanting to make a sale, after all, it's easier to sell somebody a second snake than a second snake + another set up!

especially with the size difference i'd recommend they're separated asap!

please have a good read of this thread http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1070 it may be 16 pages long but please read it.

Actually it wasn't the shop owner, he cautioned me and told me to do some research before I considered it. I did and I've read a lot of stuff.

I suppose the only problem I would have with them might be size and breeding. I carefully monitor them both, and as some in those pages said, 'its at your own risk' I'm going to try it and its all good at the moment. He's almost a year and a half by the way, I just checked the dates

You can only go by the advice you are given.. reading up on co-hab threads and the possible dangers will give you a heads up on what can go wrong. By choosing to continue (which is entirely your own choice) you must understand the risks that can happen. xxx

I'm still reading through the 16 pages, but so far I understand the risks and possibilities. Thanks to all for the warnings, I'm pretty sure I've got it handled well.

Can I just ask, my older corn is two and a bit years old, I weighed her just and she is 480 grams (sounds overweight to me? she doesn't really look it) and she is around 3.5 foot. When I looked up breeding, they spoke of the rule of three, 300 grams, 3 years and 3 foot. So she would be okay to breed? Or is her age a serious problem?

Also, can corns produce eggs (fertile or not) on their own? Like a chicken or something?

Some corns are just bigger than others!
Do you have any other pictures of her? Usually creases or rolls in the skin when the snakies fold over on themselves, as well as 'hips' can help you tell if you have a chunky one.
I dont think the age is a huge factor, so long as they arent just a yearling or something - I believe most corns are abouts 3ft and 300g at 3 years anywho

And yep, most reptiles can lay infertile eggs without ever having contact with a male

Hiya and welcome to the foum. Your snakes are gorgeous. Your female does sound quite hefty but it's hard to tell if she is overweight without moe pics. She is ok size wise if she does become gravid and i think age isn't as important but i think I would still err on the side of caution.
The co-habbing thing is a highly argued issue but if you have done all your research and are fully prepared for any problems then people should not pull you down (not that they are). I would just make sure you have a spare set up available in case of any problems. Actually thinking of that, you should have them both seperate now anyway so that your new one can go through adequate quaranteen period.

Thanks to you both for the advice :) I'll post some more pictures of her, I think she may be gravid with infertile eggs :S I took her to be sexed by my reptile man and when he held her he had a weird look and asked if she had seen any other males or ever been bred. When I looked again yesterday and today, her belly does seem to be a little lumpy and round (hence the 'IS SHE FAT??' lol).

Sorry for the overload of pictures! These were taken about two days ago.

Oh and here's from today, I think you can make out the lumpy belly.

Any ideas guys?

edit add: The lumps are more prominant in real life. And she is showing most of the signs (moving around viv MUCH more often, gone into shed, won't eat, which is unusual as she has never refused one before).

She doesnt look obese to me, just a wee bit plump!
My Mew (about the same age as Lyra, but smaller) had a lumpy tummy a bit like that a couple of months back but nothing came of it, so i assume she was just ovulating.
The shed could be coincidental, but it also could be a pre-lay shed. I'd stick in a laying box, just in case.

Was she like that before you got Pan? (sorry if i skimmed over that if you have said that!) A male his size is very capable of impregnating a female

Hmm, thanks for the reply. She was, I took her to the shop at which she was 'diagnosed' with possible pregnancy the same day I bought Pan. So it definately wasn't him lol

I'll (somehow) find a laying box and pop in in there. Do you any reccomdentations I could use? Would a shoe box be okay with some moss in it? (I'll look up the correct moss, I can't think of the type right now).

Thank you for all the help :) I think I should have probably have posted this somewhere else..
