Took my staffy for a walk over the fields today,I saw a person walking in the distance with another dog of the lead so put mine back on the lead.upon doing this I looked to my right where there is a pond and there was a white rabbit.

I walked up to it and could c it was no wild rabbit pure white red eyes and bent grey ears lol I shouted out to the bloke saying don't supose you no anyone that has lost a rabbit do you and he laughed and said no why? He came over and agreed it was no wild rabbit said it won't last long and left. I spent a good hour trying to catch this rabbit not wanting a fox to get tere first lol

I managed to get it in the end which I was really happy about apart from all the scratches :) I walked back threw the only locall houses with a few people laughing at me as I was walking a staffy holding a rabbit yet no one has claimed it yet.

So I've brought it home knowing nothing about rabbits I've used a make do home given it a carrot which it had in seconds as well as getting some rabbit pellets from a locall shop. I have a feeling I'm goin to be haveing to sort something more permanent, but I'd rather be lumbered with it than a fox get hold of it.

Any info would be great about rabbits
here are some pics Lol

From the second picture it doesn't look very old. I would have paid to see you trying to catch it. Ha-ha!

If you are happy to keep it until its owner claims it, or keep if it stays unclaimed, best to let the Police know that you are caring for it meantime. You could also register it as found with the RSPCA/SSPCA. Also let your local pet shop know and put up a 'found notice'.

Good on you for capturing it anyway. I doubt if it has any real survival instincts.

Lovely rabbit Lucky too by the sounds of it. Hay would be a good thing to feed the rabbit as well as veg and the rabbit food, you can get it from most pet shops. It is good roughage and gives them something to munch on.

If you intend to keep the rabbit long term, I would suggest feeding it a complete food rather than the mix that you have now. It prevents selective feeding and ensures that they get the best nutrition. Burgess Excel is a very good one and is widely available.

As for more long term housing, it is really dependent on whether you want to keep the rabbit inside or outdoors.

Is that house made of polystyrene? I would be inclined to remove it because rabbits tend to chew *everything* and that could be dangerous if it ate some. A cardboard or wooden 'hide' would be much better for it and wood would help to keep its teeth short as they can overgrow if they don't have something to gnaw on.

It might be worth putting some posters up locally to see if anybody has lost it as rabbits are quite good at escaping

thats a very lucky and pretty rabbit. he will want some hay daily along with the mix feed as they have a need to chew, we feed the rabbits at work hay and pellets daily and fresh veg 3 times a week, apprently if you put a litter tray near where they eat they will use that to toilet in which makes cleaning easer! if you end up with him long term he will need a house where he is able to stand up on his back legs, most pet shop rabbit hutches are too small! rabbits are prone to flystrike too so check his gentials are clean reguarly!! hope thats of use to you

It looks like it's either a Californian or Himalayan bunny, the difference being the Himalayans are a small breed.

I'm no rabbit expert by far but it seems fairly big for a rabbit, I shall remove the polystyrene as that was just a empty broccoli box it's currently only in a 4 by 2 open viv. I got a couple of chew bars from the shop as well. thanx for the help lets hope it's still doing strong in the morning as it must of been terified for a good hour

You can get some really big rabbits try googling Flemish Giants, Old English or Giant Lops. When he's more settled weigh him that'll give you an idea if he's a big rabbit or a normal or a dwarf, to be honest he doesn't look like a dwarf from the pictures.

As he has such big ears, he's gonna be big. The fact that one ear is lopped tells me it's a cross, and he is defrost hymilayan in colour. Although it is a breed in its own right. I would say it was that young as the head looks like an adult size and shape. Id say he looks under weight. Plent of hay, plenty dry food, and a small amount of green veg. As he will have eaten only grass whilst out. Anything non green contains too much sugar and will send his stomach into shock. Ithe fact that he's lively and eating is a good sign :).

I do love bunnies, they have such character.
Would be a good idea to find out if its male or female. Rabbits really do breed .....well.....like rabbits..... there is a strong possbility that if its female it may well have been mated by a wild rabbit. If no one claims it and you choose to keep it you get alot more than you bargained for and I do mean alot.

Katie I was very close to doing just that I started to walk back as it was out of site for a good Half hour in a thorn bush. Thats when I thought hay ho let's c how good the bad named really aggressive Staffordshire is at hunting lol she sniffed round for a while dived in the bush and nudged it out without picking it up or anything (soppy thing ) . That's when I gave it the final go tied roxy to a tree took my jumper of an managed to get it over the Bugga which stopped it running and grabbed it lol, then it was te interesting bit trying to unleash the dog from the tree whist holding a rabbit which was interesting. Straight after I've knocke on local houses etc and asked the local kids I usually bump in to when walking the dog so if anyone would no I'm sure te local kids would.

It's still unclaimed and alive this morning, can I tell what sex it is or is that a vet joby ? Thanx for the help guys it was the dam Ickle red eyes glaring at me that made me not give up lol

It's a beautiful rabbit and so friendly someone out there is obviously missing a much loved pet. It might be worth popping it along to the vets or rspca just to see if it's been chipped or reported missing.

It can be hard to tell if a rabbit is fully grown just by looking at it, especially if you don't know whether it is a cross breed or not.

It's quite easy to sex an adult rabbit. Male rabbit testicles are quite obvious, but many males are neutered so this clue might be missing (as they appear to be in yours, unless it is a younger rabbit than it looks). You press gently on either side of the vent and see what comes out. There are lots and lots of articles about how to do it and what to look for on the internet and youtube is actually quite helpful for sexing videos If in doubt, it might be worth taking it to a vet to check over and have them sex it for you.
