i have gone into the viv to change water and just do a general check and noticing that she has a thing for going to sleep on the cold side and when i come to handle her she cold. im just wondering if its a normal thing for them to go to sleep for quite awhile on the cold end?

Mine is always in her cold end unless she's digesting her meal, so I would say it's absolutely fine as long as your temps are correct. Snakes run away from a too hot end and stay on the cool one. How hot is your hot end?

They will and should feel cold when you touch them ;) as their hotspot should be lower than our body temp :). It might be that it's a fav hide, try swapping them and see what happens lol x

Excuse me, so you have the heat mat on without a stat, and without a thermometer? Then very probably the hot end is way too hot, and I would suggest that you unplug it until you have a stat to control the temps... this is very important! Too hot an end can cause damages to the snake and burn its belly!

Hi. If you have a heatmat without a stat or thermometer, i'd unplug it till you get them. As mentioned above, it could cause damage.

Your snake will be fine for a day or two without a heatmat, better to be safe than sorry

and to answer your original question, i find Oscar is almost ALWAYS in his cold hide. As long as he's eating, pooing and shedding well, it's all good!

Seriously, unplug the mat until the stat arrives. You will do more harm than good. They are fine without heat but it can cause death with too much. Please for the sake if your snake turn the mat off and do not feed until you have a stat

I got told the same when I got my little one. Got a set up without a stat but after going on here realised I needed one so kept it off while I didn't have one and warned up/ checked temps very often for a little while after feeding to aid digestion until I got one. From what I've read ( on here and elsewhere) corns are quite hardy so as long as you've got a stat on the way it's safer keeping may off. Correct me if I'm wrong though guys (still a beginner) but from what I've learned snakes arn't good at judging temps and won't realise if they are being burned and would rather put off a few days of feeding and no heat Matt than a poorly burned snake! Xxx

Having it plugged in is doing more damage. Honestly the snake can deal will really low temps but cannot with high temps. Please please turn it off x

Gotta say I can't believe how many people get told they don't need a stat it's worrying. If I had not joined this forum I woul t have know and I got my snake from a very popular reptile store. I'm so glad I joined this site and realised what my little snake needed. So gotta say massive props to this site and those on it!

Glad you got the stat sorted
I was setting up my little one's faunarium earlier in the week (a few days before he was due to arrive), and put the 7 watt heat mat on for 15 minutes without using the stat, just to check it was working and to see how high it would get to....I was shocked when it went up to 40

Do you have a digital thermometer? The strip & dial ones are a waste of time and nowhere near accurate.
